Jman Posted April 7 Posted April 7 https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/rick-and-morty-season-9-trailer-adult-swim-1236556998/ They have a renewal though Season 12 and Dan Harmon has admitted there’s no end in sight, hence his preference for one off adventures over a serialized story. Quote
Toonamiguy321 Posted April 8 Posted April 8 I prefer the focus on one off adventures, but last seasons lack of overarching story made it feel like something was missing. It doesn’t need to be the focus, but they need something in the background that they occasionally work on. Quote
PokeNirvash Posted April 8 Posted April 8 It's because of Smiling Friends ending before the quality suffers, isn't it? Quote

naraku360 Posted April 10 Posted April 10 Wasn't there a long delay on season 2 or 3 specifically because they were running out of ideas, only to be renewed for like 5 more seasons immediately once it started airing? It was already going downhill on season 2, by the way. It's just that nobody else noticed for 2 or 3 more seasons. Quote

There was more to it than that, mostly a lot of infighting on the staff on what way the show should go. Harmon wanted to whine about his shitty relationships and write his incest fantasies, Roiland wanted to do a season of “I’m Mr X!” improv episodes, and the new writing staff wanted to do overarching plot lines to make Reddit clap. All absolutely terrible ideas, but when combined together, watered down enough to be palatable. At that point, Adult Swim could smell a repeat of The Boondocks production schedule, and decided to tighten up everyone’s leash and set firm deadlines. Which gives us a yearly release, but each season always has a few episodes you can tell were picked up off the cutting room floor because it was the only way to reach 10 episodes. Quote
