Trusting a Jason Demarco anime trailer? Could not be me.

Hard same. I'll still watch whatever they dump in the trough, but I'm at maximum cynicism after the one-two dick punch of Rickanime and especially Uzumaki.

Apparently from the panel Watanabe said he was sick of Bebop and this is nothing like Bebop and the fans agreed.

Character’s running and jumping around exactly like Spike, so I still kinda see it.

You can tell it’s not gonna have the budget or production value of an anime from 1998, so that’s where the comparison if any stops. Not like I’m begging for it to be a sequel series in order to be good. But I also don’t think being vaguely reminded of the more popular show is that bad.

I’ve only watched Bebop and Champloo. I don’t remember the exact reason why Watanabe was disappointed in Dandy specifically but yeah.

I don’t know, I usually don’t watch newer shit for part of that reason. Either too flashy or too wonky for my eyes.

Budget cuts & crunch time is affecting this industry hard.

And then when it does look great, it either gets fan complaints (Chainsaw Man) or it goes unnoticed (Heavenly Delusion).

Simple, Japanese audiences didn’t like it. As with most Japanese creators, they don’t really care about opinions outside of Japan. So no love for Dandy at home meant the project was a failure.

This will be an interesting problem for Lazarus. We know Watanabe wants it to be a hit with Japan, but it’s being made for Toonami. And the only way it can succeed in Japan is if he tells Demarco to sit down and shut up and just let him do all the work. But will Demarco’s ego allow that to happen?

Toonami originals have also not been widely available in Japan as other seasonal shows usually are, so it will be interesting to see if Lazarus drops in Japan close to its Toonami premier.

Well, that adds more context to his bit of resentment with Bebop besides already saying everything there is to be said on it long ago.

Still, all it takes is that one big name on his portfolio to see that he had western appeal perfectly in mind before. Lupin III further down historically was the same way.

It’d be sad if that was a concern for him so far into his career. Especially when he’s already upset with the thought of typecasting.
