Why didn't this go into mass production?

"I don't know anybody at the Department of Defense, Mr. Tiahrt, who thinks that this program should, or would, ever be operationally deployed. The reality is that you would need a laser something like 20 to 30 times more powerful than the chemical laser in the plane right now to be able to get any distance from the launch site to fire ... So, right now the ABL would have to orbit inside the borders of Iran in order to be able to try and use its laser to shoot down that missile in the boost phase. And if you were to operationalize this you would be looking at 10 to 20 747s, at a billion and a half dollars apiece, and $100 million a year to operate. And there's nobody in uniform that I know who believes that this is a workable concept."

So, it's just like the common electric light bulb, before it was eventually made practical.

Imagine if that product had been abandoned.

No, no it’s nothing like “the common electric light bulb”

but please explain how the invention and implementation of the light bulb is the same as laser technology meant to confuse missiles away from commercial planes

Not at all.

It is the fact that laser technology is not good enough or cheap enough yet to make this practical.

Read the cancellation article in the link that you yourself posted.

In order for this thing to have been operationally successful it would have to fly in contested airspace.

So, they're not interested in  improvement research.

OMG READ THE ARTICLE

"By 2015, the Missile Defense Agency had started efforts to deploy a laser on a high-altitude UAV. Rather than a manned jetliner containing chemical fuels flying at 40,000 feet (12 km), firing a megawatt laser from a range of "tens of kilometers" at a boost-phase missile, the new concept envisioned an unmanned aircraft carrying an electric laser flying at 65,000 feet (20 km), firing the same power level at targets potentially up to "hundreds of kilometers" away for survivability against air defenses. While the ABL's laser required 55 kg (121 lb) to generate one kW, the MDA wanted to reduce that to 2–5 kg (4.4–11.0 lb) per kW, totaling 5,000 lb (2,300 kg) for a megawatt. Unlike the ABL, which required its crew to rest and chemical fuel to be reloaded, an electric laser would need only power generating from fuel to fire, so a UAV with in-flight refueling could have near-inexhaustible endurance and armament. A "low-power demonstrator" has been planned to fly sometime in or around 2021."

They scrapped the program because it was practically and tactically unsuccessful. They then continued research with better tech and UAV's. This is how research goes for DoD programs.

I love using your posts with clickbait titles and and no real substance as a means to shitpost with things that I think are interesting, but come on man. I would be happy to debate or discuss things that I am knowledgeable of, but maybe read the articles that you post first? Haha

Oh, I know lmao I just had to include that for sanity's sake!

As a practitioner of the sciences, I love to discuss these type of things. But only in a sincere fashion.

You won’t find anything sincere here. He didn’t even read the fuckin article ffs 🤦‍♀️

I was gonna add that too, but I I’d rather not have a thread in TD dedicated to me. 😂

I can't even see it anymore so it doesn't even matter anymore anyway. I guess, however, you could also say Gemini gonna Gemini...or something.

Frankly, you should all be congratulating him on figuring out what Wikipedia is...

because lord knows Wikipedia could kill half of that mother fucker's threads when they're still in his ball sac.

Yeah, but...jelly babies.

His threads make me feel like:

I’m immune to his shit at this point and only come in his many nonsensical threads when I’m bored.

really it’s just ridiculous at this point. Once you figure out he posts only to do the equivalent of hearing himself talk, it stops blowing your mind. The stupidity of it all😆

Yeah, I wish he had gotten the message and stayed away. (I still maintain that we're fucked no matter who's running things.)

Yea, I get that he is just being asinine, but many of the the things he shitposts about are topics that I rather enjoy, and in some cases I am even knowledgeable on.

I usually just respond sincerely, since many of the topics of his posts are actually interesting to discuss.. if he took them seriously! haha

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Actually, i think Packard belonged in IB, and pooh stated it clearly: He likes to see his own posts. The only problem is he also takes himself at least a little seriously so he may have ended up wandering back to Babbling.

That's the thing. I cannot tell if he is serious but dumb or just trying to shitpost/troll but badly.

I lean towards the former.

All you get is idiotic takes and dumb replies for your troubles. I appreciate you though cuz your knowledge and passion is what allowed you to read the article and point out the article answered his question. It also spared me, and many like me, from actually having to read the article 😆

Lmao I am used to it.

In my line of work I am constantly having to deal with very technical things and then dumb them down for the customer, treading through all sorts of rabbit holes. So it is nothing of stress for me!

Though I do feel that nothing I post ever reaches him, I am glad others at least get something out of it xD

It could be a case of both, truth be told. But that's just my non-expert opinion.

Nah, Packard believes everything that comes out his mouth. This is the dude who insists cigarette smoke doesn’t have an odor.

Oh, yeah. He did say that. Well, they definitely do, especially some of the lower-end cigs. i once had a friend who would smoke Doral cigarettes, and they made him smell like he had shit himself. I told him one day about it and he didn't appreciate it. (I told him the cigarettes were doing that to his clothes and he told me to shut up.) He later told me that he knew, but he loved the brand of cigarettes so much that he kept on smoking them. Plus, like atomic said can happen, he had gotten so used to it he didn't even notice anymore.

I mean if you smoke enough cigs you will not be able to smell or taste so maybe he is on to something

If only that’s what he meant. He literally thinks that smoker or non smoker you won’t smell cigarette smoke smell on clothes unless someone mentions cigarette smoke.

So a psychosomatic response? *eye roll* I wonder if he once worked at a Holiday Inn because he certainly thinks he's a psychologist.
