I forgot how good Naruto and One Piece are early on

That's how most shonen are. They start out with a good premise, then they introduce new concepts and the plot becomes convoluted beyond comprehension, and you regret the dozens of hours you spent watching the hundreds of episodes.

Most long-running shonen are only good for the first fifty or so episodes.

ive watched over 100 eps of shippuden filler, and i'd gladly do that again instead of ever watching another episode of one piece.

I've been skipping the opening and ending credits because the dub site I frequent uses the Japanese themes for the Naruto and OP, and I always much preferred the dubbed English version Viz and 4Kids themes.

Yes, and it seems the best anime tend to be around fifty episodes or shorter. I think elongating a series only helps with the merchandising prospects. Although One Piece usually gets ratings of around five percent and Japan is an aging country. Either the kids there really like it or there are a ridiculous amount of otaku. Or most likely both.

Togashi, as in the creator of Hunter x Hunter.  I only saw its 1999 anime adaptation after sitting through Naruto's opening arc, and all I could do was be amazed at just how much Kishimoto had ripped off the Hunter Exam (down to very minor details!) for the Chunin Exam, only he managed to lose most of what made the former enjoyable in the process.
