I went and bought shit I didn’t need so I could get a free blanket...

When I used to work in sales in the mall. You'd be surprised how much people would fall for this. Most of the items we put on promotion were worth no more than $5. But we would convince customers with a $40 purchase to spend $75 to get the item. I didn't like it, but they pretty much would threaten employees with possibly being fire if they didn't make sales goals. I'm glad I'm not working that job anymore.

I would hate that too. I'd probably get fired.

I hate everything about sales. I hate being sold to and i hate selling things. If i want something I'm going to get it, and if i don't i sure the hell don't want someone trying to make me buy it.

It's why i instantly shut down anyone trying to sell anything. Figure it's best to not waste time.

Except for girls scout cookies. They always get me. Jerks.

Sales and Service jobs are one of the fastest growing jobs in the country right now. Other options are healthcare, and computer science. So basically if you can't afford school or have the time, you won't have any options but to work in a sales job. Most people don't really have a choice, even target convinces cashiers to get people to open credit cards. Fast food places start to ask if you are interested in one of their promotions well. And there is always a supervisor breathing down someone else's neck if they don't "give the customer the script". I think it's important for customers to just be polite and say no thank you. They think employees do it on purpose but it's really upper level management that enforces it. It's also one of the reasons why I went back to school. lol

Oh yeah. I always try to be polite about it. I know I'm lucky to work in recycling and not in sales.

It makes me sad that retail workers and people in similar jobs get so little respect.

I've always been pretty tough to sucker into promotions like that. Like, "Buy 3 for this price point!" But, I don't need 3 of those, and if I just buy the 1 or 2 I need, I'm saving more money (in the short term, I guess).

I recognize a lot of it is also designed just to move more product, keep inventory flowing.

Marketing is one hell of an industry.

Marketing is now the science of manipulation. It's so far along that way that if it were being done by our government people would be losing their shit, but for some reason it's ok for extremely powerful companies to do it
