new HD TVs actually look unnatural (technology rant)

New HD or 4K?

Anything with a refresh rate of 120htz or higher.  The moving images look worse instead of better- see the problem is it looks so good it looks bad. Like its not a natural image.

Also some of the overly intense coloring looks bad- what happens is the darker colors like black, grey, brown, etc get neglected and don't contrast... the screen wants to show off its bright colors and neglects the dark colors.

I have 2 new TVs here. Both are 32 inch samsung 1080p. One has 60 hrtz one has 120hrtz with the upgraded bright colors option or something...  Option A is $220.  Option B was $350

I am not experiencing any more enjoyment out of the upgrade, however playstation 3 hd games look too damn good to the point where the background is attracting too much attention and is unnatural. Movies suffer from multiple failed elements.

Anime is the worst- bright colors look amazing but the dark colors look too dull.

I remember years ago, my uncle got an HD tv, a massive one, like 72" or bigger, something absurd, and the first time watching anything in HD for me, was espn, so not only were they too crisp, they were also larger than an actual person.  There was almost a fake 3D effect to it, it didn't look right.  They were clearer on the screen than actual people in front of me using my own eyes, if that makes sense, and it was unnatural.  Everything looked like it was green-screened.

Yeah that happens with my 55inch QLED Samsung downstairs. There are ways to change the settings.... really though I find it rather annoying. 120hrtz should look fantastic for a ps4 game and maybe sports.. otherwise I don't see the point in any of this. 1080p is just fine without all this other shit.

it's because the human eye compensates and generates images, literally, past 23fps - but that's not entirely true either - otherwise you wouldn't notice how fluid things are past 60fps - 120/144hz etc.

Generally speaking the longer your actually in front of such a display, the quicker you will get used to it.

EDIT:
This is another reason movies are around 23-24 fps. I mean you will see the transition to higher hz and fps first, but you have an entire generation that is used to <60fps. We're just used to it after the last 20+ years.

The brain doesn't need all that information. Thats why better isn't better because there is no need for all that detail and color.

I like it.

Though I'm still choosing to run at 60fps on 1080p.

I haven't seen a display I truly like besides a few Ultra Wide solutions.

21:9 aspect ratio needs to become the standard before I switch. (which it probably won't)

Try 120hrtz. Its looks amazing for some video games and sports. You can really see the difference, but as I said on other media content there can be a disintegrating element.
