is it bad form to qsk them on the 1st day? kinda need to know

I don't think it is necessarily bad, depending on how you ask the question. Just ask something like, "Can I ask when my first pay date will be? Is it from start date or is it based on pay period?", I would probably only ask the manager in private though and not when they are busy with something else. Probably not a good idea to bother them while they are handling some issue or something.

At the end of the interview, when they asked if you had any questions for them, thats when you should have asked this question

This is also probably true, though a lot of people are nervous about asking such stuff in interviews. I did when I went to my first interview for a job and I still got it. :|

Being honest with employers especially about expectations tends to be more effective than not.

Yes. It is bad form. If I was the one hiring you, I'd immediately think you're here for a paycheck. No real motivation to keep you, knowing your work history.

Good advice here.
