  1. Let's see... You can still lament shows not airing while thinking their genre is overstuffed. Stampede isn't terrible, and quite the technical achievement, but I think people preferred the original story. Shame the first anime never got to the rest of the manga. One of the few good things about Zaslav being such a penny pincher is that he seems more willing to license internally made stuff to Toonami to fill gaps rather than spend precious money. Jujutsu Kaisen is a Crunchyroll property whose movie outgrossed the Bob's Burgers movie (which never belonged in theaters anyway, but I'm pretty sure had a contract rider forcing it). It's never airing on Toonami. Budget's being crunched on all levels is very unsurprising. They need that budget for shows, when they're available. Oshi no Ko is actually available to them if they so desired (being a Sentai product), and it seems to be connecting with people despite it not being an action show, but probably the most scathing deconstruction of the idol industry since Perfect Blue. Not surprised he likes Moribito. It never would have gotten airtime unless someone on staff personally enjoyed it. Funny thing is the franchise these days is better known for the trio of live-action J-dramas that started in 2016 rather than the 1 season anime (which last I checked, is free to watch on Prime Video). Him liking the original GITS more than SAC is actually a genuine surprise.
  2. Bizarre. Last thing they need is more reasons to abandon linear for streaming.
  3. https://www.indiewire.com/2023/04/unicorn-warriors-eternal-genndy-tartakovsky-animation-1234831292/ Genndy interview with IndieWire discussing Unicorn and other projects.
  4. Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku 3. Witch from Mercury 16.
  5. Primal takes a break next week for an hour premiere of Unicorn Warriors Eternal. So leading off with an hour of the kids show.
  6. Current moderate, but trying to go down to light. I drink a few times a week but I am very particular about having hard limits.
  7. I wish there were more reviews of Unicorn. A week out the only review is Paste Magazine. The core of the argument is a super basic question - Is the content the main driver for the viewers or the context? I argue that given it’s an adult block (and the general demeanor of anime fans as a whole about how they get with their animation), the content matters. From there, we question if “weirdest cartoon yet” brings viewers or repels them.
  8. I'm sure they would if only to fill up another timeslot, but it sounds like it's not their call.
  9. Sym-Bionic Titan was written off for taxes. That's not exactly a good example of being warmly embraced. The last time there was an unabashed kids show on the block was Beware The Batman, which was another written-off disaster. It was also notable that the ratings tanked for the Batfleck, then rose afterwards for Hellsing Ultimate and Black Lagoon. That alone should point how the Adult Swim/Toonami audience feels about kids shows that don't offer any adult material. I am well, WELL aware that I do not speak for everyone, and I am not so arrogant as to believe that my tastes are inherently better than others. But there is a definite correlation between shows not meeting that "adult" requirement and low ratings. And I feel like a jerk here because it's Genndy, and Genndy is awesome, so I feel bad saying anything bad about him. Also Akame did monster ratings for the block, even if a lot of the more highbrow fans (and DeMarco) merely viewed it as a trade-off for Parasyte.
  10. Well, the block doesn’t get trending shows anymore, or if it does, it gets them too late, and that all circles back to my core argument, Unicorn is a proud kids show and I don’t know how that will work. Getting away from the Hell’s Paradise tangent for a bit, we have a new preview clip - And the show will be ran in quite a few places -
  11. https://deadline.com/feature/hollywood-writers-strike-wga-explained-1235341146/ A strike seems all but guaranteed for Monday. https://www.reuters.com/technology/netflix-invest-25-bln-south-korea-make-tv-shows-movies-2023-04-25/ Meanwhile Netflix has made a tremendous investment in the Korean entertainment industry.
  12. No one knew what it was till a few weeks ago, which is my point. They’re not going to see what the show is and follow it, they’re going to see a new, very violent show with good animation and be intrigued by that. Which is the opposite of what I expect when people realize Unicorn is a kids show, even if its a very weird one.
  13. It’s blowing up into one of the most popular shows this season. And it has the blood and adult content plants crave that Toonami fans want.
  14. No, we’re keeping it family friendly apparently. No blood and gore, no sex, and no foul language. Nothing that would go beyond a TV-PG because this was originally designed for HBO Max as a family friendly action show before the shakeup. Hence my mentioning the resident ultra violent show this season. Edit - I’m torn on how well this will do. Toonami as a viewing block tends to have a mixed at best track record on overly confusing or obtuse shows, and a very poor one on stuff that isn’t adult enough, be it in violence or the like. But Genndy is a name that commands respect from this audience and it’s something you can only see on Max, rather than something airing on Crunchyroll weeks ahead of them. And because I like beating dead horses, here’s the Hell’s Paradise opening. What do you think would have gotten more eyeballs?
  15. https://www.pastemagazine.com/tv/adult-swim-hbo-max/unicorn-warriors-eternal-review The cartoon is described as weird as hell BUT also as family friendly, so expect people to be bitter this is airing and not Hell’s Paradise (which is essentially a spiritual successor to Ninja Scroll). The reviewer seemed to KIND of like it but admitted he didn’t know what was going on till halfway through the 10 episode order.
  16. She worked on an utterly despised Young Justice comic book that essentially calls the fans bigots for not liking the new direction, and is responsible for a horribly selling Robin series.
  17. Yeah, way back in the mid-2000s, when Tobey Maguire wanted to produce the film. This production has been cursed.
  18. I maintain that the next few months will be very interesting for that show. I may be overestimating the Netflix show, but if that is a hit, I imagine Zaslav might have an opinion on the show continuing to air. If that's not a factor, the pace of Dressrosa certainly will be. I can't predict anything else at this point unless DeMarco does want to raid the Sentai warchest. Akhiabara Maid War is right there.
  19. I just finished reading the whole script. I think if ever there was evidence of someone missing the entire goddamn point of Macross, besides Harmony Gold, it is this script. It is terrible in every sense of the word and would have probably become shorthand for bad films in the same way Batman and Robin is.
  20. Considering the rumor AEW is getting an additional Saturday night show, we could easily see this at midnight in lieu of a Primal rerun. Granted I think that’s the point you throw in the towel on the block as a whole, but I think more people would watch it than yet another Primal rerun or a re-tooled Y7 show.
  21. http://scriptshadow.net/screenplay-review-robotech/?fbclid=IwAR07uSypPT_sgN3l8uEe5Ttd40Pphp37MCSg8qhoVFDyPCfu8m8Im7v1mtU It’s an equal parts fun and frustrating read if you’ve ever watched Macross. I’m still scouring the internet for the 2007 draft Lawrence Kasdan wrote.
  22. If it helps any, I think Genndy hates this as much as Toonami viewers do. This is also why I think logically speaking their biggest potential get for 2024 is Creature Commandos rather than any of the hot anime releases. Warner is a mess right now, so it is what it is.
  23. Except unlike the last one, anime is more popular than ever. It’s just not available on Toonami.
