Uzumaki - Episode 2 Discussion
Mr. Idea Box replied to [classic swim]'s topic in Episode Discussion Archive
I'm sure the MASSIVE pool of animation directors is why this week's episode looks like that. But if the rest of the series has a similar-sized pool, this cannot end well from the viewer's perspective. -
When you consider everything that has happened between 1997 and 1999, primarily picking up Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and Ronin Warriors, and compound that with everything that happened since, including the launch of Adult Swim, it really feels like this hesitant yet hasty approach signified the true changing of motives from "building a better cartoon show" to "building an anime block". Sure, the term "anime" describes animation in general in other languages, and Toonami would still pick up American cartoons like ReBoot, the 2002 He-Man revival, and Megas XLR, they usually don't get as much awareness as whatever Funimation's making in the pipeline. And now, 25 years later, with The Venture Bros. having a conclusive finale, shows like My Adventures with Superman getting the better timeslots, and even Jonny Quest and Space Ghost getting high-profile comics from Dynamite Entertainment, one thing seems clear... Toonami needs Jonny Quest again.

sailor moon Sailor Moon on Toonami Rewind Discussion
Mr. Idea Box replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Well, it's about time we got a general discussion board for Sailor Moon. Not that I'm complaining. -
Well, I didn't expect two extended Uzumaki episodes, nor did I expect them to reveal the even-numbered episodes only. On the one hand, I'm glad they're not condensing the show into two hours. On the other hand, the Halloween marathon should be the dubbed version for their sake. As for what this means for the future, I have mixed opinions on this. To make a long, almost rant-like story short, I'm beginning to consider skipping most of the 2024 holiday season as far as Toonami's concerned.

Lazarus Panel confirmed for NYCC Oct. 18
Mr. Idea Box replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Fair point. But I kinda thought Lazarus would be later in the year. -
If Crunchyroll is getting the simulcast, I'd argue it's safe to assume it'll be dubbed exclusively there as well. I mean, not only is it a 100% new Dragon Ball anime, but it's also the final project that Akira Toriyama worked on. Plus, if that rumor regarding Nadolny holds any water, that just adds further reasoning to the Sony exclusivity. But if Daima does become a Crunchyroll exclusive dub? It'll join Spy X Family and Chainsaw Man as shows whose licensing money would eclipse Uzumaki's budget, and I'm not talking Naruto's ramen tab here. At any rate, the best hope now is for them to go directly to Toei. Otherwise, the future's gonna get more interesting than I predicted.

And the last week of What A Cartoon ends, presumably being the last time we see these shorts on television. As for my thoughts on the final six? At least they got the original openings back this week. Pat Ventura is one of the most bizarre creators this side of Ralph Bakshi. I don't want to say the Courage pilot looks bad, but you can tell Dilworth had a bigger animation budget for the series.

Swap IFG and Daima, and this would be my dream November Toonami lineup.
-
If they did air this show next year, my hope is that they air it in September and give it the October marathon treatment. But let's be reasonable, it'll get a January or February cycle if that does happen.

The one show that would be deemed perfect for Toonami otherwise, and I forgot it in my predictions. Goes to show how sparse information was before now. Option B would be the best outcome for Toonami, while the worst would be Option A. Do you want the Undead Unluck fate thrust upon Goku and Vegeta? As for what I want out of these rumors, it's probably Option C or D, as I'm split down the middle.

You know, if it was on both blocks, I'd prefer Rewind getting the lead over Toonami. Of course, if it was really up to me, Invincible Fight Girl would've been the first Rewind exclusive. But I know that's unlikely at this rate. On the other hand, I too would like more than two shows a night on Rewind. With all this hoopla, I didn't even think of how interesting a post-Naruto schedule would look. Between that, Uzumaki finally airing, and the latest Demon Slayer arc they could grab, I guess we're about to have one of the most mind-freeing two months in quite some time. In fact, I'd almost welcome a two-month hiatus. All that's really changing is a One Piece episode surplus and MHA waiting a couple more months for its return, especially if Toonami Rewind covers the slack on Fridays. Would that really be bad this year, after two finales and a handful of originals?
