FLCL marathon for Memorial Day weekend
CaptainStarwind replied to Blatch's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I don't think Toonami would want to go back to airing a double block again at this point. The only reason they were doing that in the beginning, to my knowledge, was due to a lack of shows they could air. Even when they got enough shows to justify a six hour block, the last three hours were still hour long show blocks for a while. As much as DeMarco apparently likes a "smaller" Toonami, if they have the hours they'll try and find the shows to program it before resorting to breaking the block up again. -
FLCL marathon for Memorial Day weekend
CaptainStarwind replied to Blatch's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I shouldn't be too surprised that they decided on a Memorial Day marathon again this year, but I thought that maybe they would finally do something different. It's been 6 years since the whole #BringBackToonami campaign that led to Toonami's revival on May 26, 2012. Being that this is the first year that Toonami falls on May 26 since it was revived, I had my hopes that Toonami would do something different for Memorial Day, in honor of it's "re-birthday". A movie, maybe, if they haven't blown this year's budget yet. EVA 3.33 would have been fitting, as much as I hate it, since Toonami aired the other two. But we get our normal marathon instead. I can only hope that they do something fun during the commercial breaks. Or learn to pronounce Fooly Cooly correctly. If they manage to do that then I'll be more than satisfied. Speaking of which, a FLCL marathon. I should at least be happy that it isn't DBZ Kai, but they can't be expecting this to do ratings gold, especially since it's both seasons back to back. Of course, they wouldn't air a marathon on Memorial Day if they expected their ratings to be good, so there's that. Again, excuse the possible incoherence in my post. -
We literally found out that FLCL Seasons 2 and 3 would not be airing right after one another back in like, March. How are you only hearing about this now? I'd like to think that, if they did air FLCL Season 2 then rerun it right afterwards, it would be different from AoT and Samurai Jack. AoT was 25 episodes and aired at the top of the block. SJ was 10 episodes and was a completed story. FLCL is 6 episodes and is only half a show. If there's enough hype left over after Season 2 finishes airing, I imagine that would carry ratings until Season 3 begins. If not, then it's only 6 weeks. Besides, it makes no sense for them to shuffle the block for 6 or 7 weeks then move it right back. We get on Toonami about quick schedule changes like that, so it would probably be better for ratings in the long run if FLCL remained where it was.

So last week, I decided to start watching Darling in the FranXX, and I marathoned the episodes in between what else I was watching. Being that I live under a rock, I heard nothing at all about the, uh, "controversies" about the show until I read this thread less than 5 minutes ago. I am caught up with the show, though, so I can give my opinions on it so far. The first couple of episodes bored the hell out of me. I can see how people compared the beginning of it to a poor man's Evangelion. The tone was too melancholy for my taste, and the blatant innuendo didn't really help at all, either. The show got better for me after about Episode 3. I enjoyed the buildup to Hiro and Zero Two's third ride, even though it was fairly obvious that he would survive it. The beach episode was unnecessary in my opinion, but I was glad that it attempted a bit of world building. I really liked the episodes that focused on fleshing out the characters other than Hiro and Zero Two. The Goro episode was nice, and the Mitsuru episode made me hate him a bit less, so that's good. The Zorome episode was good for a bit of world building, as well as the hint that pilots aren't really human. I really enjoyed the flashback episode. It was really nice to finally see the past that was hinted at, and it helped me to fell a lot more sympathy for Zero Two. Much of that sympathy dissolved in the next episode, after she beats the entire crew of Parasytes sans Hiro, though I did enjoy the episode after that for getting back to advancing the story. Episode 15 reminded me a lot of the Eureka Seven episode "Morning Glory", which is my favorite episode of the series, so it gets a lot of points for that, at the very least. I'm a bit conflicted on my feelings about Ichigo and Zero Two. The show is obviously making Zero Two out to be the romantic heroine, with the tragic backstory and shared history with hero, but that doesn't change the fact that she's pretty much knowingly murdered numerous pilots (and would have murdered Hiro too if he didn't turn out to be her "Darling" from the past). I think the show does try to get around that by making it that it was (at least somewhat) the choice of the other pilots to ride with her, but that really doesn't change the fact that she feels no real remorse over it, or at least doesn't do so yet. She was also clearly only in it for herself, and later Hiro, in the beginning of the series, though I can reasonably accept that as stemming from her tragic childhood. Long story short: she's definitely meant to be the romantic interest of the story, and I'd definitely prefer her over Ichigo, but there really isn't getting around the fact that she did a lot of terrible things, and the show is going to really have to work in the second half to make her truly a sympathetic character. Now for Ichigo. It's clear that the show is making her out to be the third wheel in the love triangle (I think that makes sense). Between her early distrust of Zero Two, her treatment towards her in Episode 14, and having to be told off by her copilot (twice) to bring Hiro and Zero Two together, the audience is meant to vilify her and want to see her put down. And admittedly, it was satisfying to see her not get what she wants. But the problem with that (which even I understood as I was cheering against her) is that what she's doing really isn't anything that any reasonable person wouldn't also do. Daos put it best: she's the team leader, and she's making the decisions that she thinks are the best for her teammates and friends. And those decisions aren't that unreasonable. Her early mistrust of Zero Two is founded in the knowledge that Zero Two is not only not a team player, but also that her copilot dies after the third time they ride together. I think she probably would have reacted in the same manner even if it wasn't Hiro who was involved. Her treatment towards Zero Two in Episode 14 follows after she's been given troubling information about Zero Two, information that seems to be proven correct after Hiro is nearly killed by her. I don't think she was really in the wrong acting the way that she did. Really, the only thing that I can fault her for is being completely and utterly oblivious to the fact that Hiro doesn't love her (despite it being blatantly obvious), and even then, the way it plays out makes me think that she knows that anyway and just hopes Hiro will eventually fall in love with her. Long story short: in any other anime, Ichigo would be a really good character, but the show makes her out to be the villain, and I'm inclined to hate her, despite my better judgement. Overall, I don't find Darling in the FranXX to be an amazing show, but it's definitely not terrible, and I'm at least interested in watching it, which is more than I can say for Black Clover. I'm definitely gonna keep watching the show weekly.

I know far too many people who refuse to believe that anything animated can ever be up to par with something live action. Even something like Bebop. I guess there's still a stigma associated with animation. It can never be anything serious, only good for porn or comedy. I've had to practically hide the fact that I watch anime from my parents just because I don't want/need to hear their teasing and commenting about it anymore. It gets really frustrating. I couldn't even imagine a Gundam like that, animated or otherwise. I'm also curious as to how people will react to the copious amounts of CGI that's going to go into a live action Gundam. Honestly I don't really feel the need to go in that direction, either. Especially if there is still a stigma against serious animation, then most people will probably disregard an animated adaptation of something like Game of Thrones right off the bat, just because the live action version "can tell a more serious story." I apologize for the cynicism. It was a long night tonight and a really rainy drive home.

Good Comedy/Slice of Life this season
CaptainStarwind replied to CaptainStarwind's topic in Anime & Manga
Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii and Hinamatsuri are the two I ended up going with. Along with Steins:Gate 0, Caligula, Golden Kamuy, and Tokyo Ghoul:re (I'm not watching it if it comes to Toonami), that rounds out my spring watching. Toradora is on my short list to watch after Welcome the the NHK, though, so it'll probably happen soon. -
MY HERO ACADEMIA COMING TO TOONAMI ON MAY 5TH
CaptainStarwind replied to The1gairon's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I mean, this is probably good for Toonami, so I like that... But dammit, I was planning on watching the first two seasons of this show to catch up to the new season airing... But yes, I agree that this is probably the "psyched" show. And once again Toonami manages to surprise us. -
Since I have time on my hands again, I decided to try watching some shows as they air, rather than waiting a year after the show finishes before trying it. I already have some I've started for this season, but I don't really have any good comedy/slice of life shows picked out. Any recommendations? I'm pretty heavy on action right now so I'd prefer not an action comedy, but if you suggest it I'll consider it.

My feelings towards The Master are... complicated, to say the least. Joaquin Phoenix's character was really uncomfortable for me to watch back when I saw the movie. Perhaps that was the intent of the character, but he just never sat well with me. The movie also seems to have a cavalier attitude towards sex and nudity that I really don't appreciate. It's hard to explain, especially since I don't mind it so much in other things, but maybe it's just the fact that it doesn't mesh well with the movie. It seems out of place. To top it off, though, the movie is just plain boring. When I decided to see the movie, it was advertised to me as sort of an expose of the early days of Scientology, which sounded like it would be at least entertaining. The Master was anything but. I'll admit that the acting was very good, but it was far from saving the movie.

So this is kind of far out there, but considering recent events... what if for the "confused" anime, DeMarco intends to air something subbed? Barring the obvious (it would be a ratings killer), it seems to me like it would be something DeMarco would at least want to try once. I can even put on my tinfoil hat and say the April Fools Day prank was meant to test the waters for such a thing.

You'd be right. Like I said, Shippuden is by no means a masterpiece, but to say the show is only good for "So Bad It's Good" value is going too far. I tend to try and see the good in shows that I watch, so redeeming values stand out more to me than flaws in a show. There's only a few things, anime or otherwise, that I genuinely despise enough to not care about redeeming qualities (Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean and the film The Master are two big ones).
-
And what is that supposed to mean? I didn't say there weren't things I disagreed with in Shippuden. I don't like certain aspects of the ending, especially what becomes of Sasuke. I believe Kishimoto copped out with that. I'm never going to see Naruto as the greatest story ever told, and there are definitely anime and manga that I like over it. It has flaws, yes, but why do they matter? I enjoy Shippuden for what it is. And if your only response to my saying that is to try and backhandedly insult me for it, then I have nothing more to say to you about it.

1. It airs at 3:00 in the morning. Toonami hasn't premiered anything recent at 3:00 in the morning in a few years. 2. The only thing that would feasibly "premiere" at 3:00 in the morning would be an uncut rerun of an older show, much like Outlaw Star. 3. If Toonami had bought the rights to such a show, they would have premiered it there after Outlaw Star ended. If the show had to be delayed, than Cowboy Bebop could possibly just be a placeholder for now.

The cases for the original Naruto and One Piece were different. In the case of Naruto, Toonami had gotten that at the end of 2012 and aired the first 52 episodes of it, then restarted it when Shippuden came on the block in 2014. It was somewhere in the mid to late 30s when Toonami took it off for good. Given that they only ran up to episode 52, my guess would be that they got the rights for the first 52 episodes as a stopgap, expecting to have enough to afford Shippuden by the end of 2013. They probably got a 2 year contract for it, so they just aired it from 1 again in 2014. While One Piece started in the middle of the show (at Long Ring Long), it aired the episodes in order from that point until it was removed from the block. That's a lot different than starting from episode 1, airing in order until episode 35, then jumping to episode 89. You can also make the case that One Piece aired on the original Toonami up through the middle of Skypiea, so they really one started on Adult Swim from the arc right after that. With Shippuden, it would be substantially different. Shippuden has aired starting from episode 1, and has aired to this point consistently. Toonami randomly jumping ahead 30+ episodes in the middle of an arc is unprecedented, which makes me think this is just a scheduling glitch.

"One of them is gonna get ppl super psyched, one is gonna confuse ppl, and one is gonna be 'right in the pocket'" I think we ALL know what's coming now... But seriously though, given the options, I have to say that the show that's gonna get people "super psyched" is Re: Zero, or at least I want it to be. Give how DeMarco thinks, "super psyched" could also just mean popular, so it could be Boruto. I can take "gonna confuse ppl" in two different ways: the first way is that the show itself is strange or bizarre. The second way I can take it is that the show is not something Toonami would normally air, being that it's been an action block. Pop Team Epic seems most likely if we go with the former interpretation. As for the latter, I'm not sure, though if I had to take it to mean anything, it would be that Toonami is airing a slice of life show. What show that would actually be, though, I don't know. I'll just go with Lucky Star for now, knowing full well it's not gonna be that, and move on. The way he phrases the third one makes me think it's a reference to a show. The first show I automatically think of is Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket. Now Adult Swim aired that 15 years ago, though given how gung ho Toonami is about airing Gundam, it wouldn't surprise me if they went for another one after IBO ended. Only problem with this is that the show is 6 episodes long, so they'll be searching for something else real quick or reducing the block length. If we go with the interpretation that "in the pocket" is musically related, do we assume that he's hinting at an anime about music? Is it K-On? We won't know yet, though I doubt it.

Trying to decide which Toonami shows to watch
CaptainStarwind replied to Winter_Rain's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Yeah, I can definitely agree with this. If you're not being too critical about things, then SAO overall is pretty enjoyable. I still genuinely enjoy the Aincrad Arc and personally thing that, barring anything else, it would work really well on it's own as a one cour series. -
More than likely this is just a bit of a scheduling glitch, though I'm sure someone will ask DeMarco about it on Twitter eventually. I don't think I could stomach Boruto on Toonami. Say what you will about the quality of Shippuden, but there's a bit of a nostalgia factor with Naruto and Shippuden for me. Combining that with the fact that I really don't hate much in terms of anime, and I genuinely enjoy Shippuden. I don't feel the same way about Boruto.

Yes, because Toonami not getting a show yet this year = DeMarco has blown Toonami's entire budget on originals. Quite a fucking leap of logic.

Is that like bukkake? Surely you don't mean seppuku, do you?
