Final Space is an excellent example of something else on [as] that did only slightly better in the ratings and carries the same level of star power (for example, Little Cato is played by Steven Yeun, formerly of The Walking Dead, and both contain David Tennant) in the same timeslot on a different night. I'd say if it gets a Season 3 (and Season 2 actually did BETTER on the whole on [as] than Season 1), then gen:LOCK has a pretty good chance at a Season 2, UNLESS the upheaval actually took place DURING gen:LOCK's run on Toonami in response to its underwhelming retention of Dragon Ball Super's viewership. If that's the case, it makes it a lot less likely, but we don't know when it took place. From what I understand, it probably happened a couple of weeks BEFORE gen:LOCK aired on Toonami, which means a decent chance of a Season 2 under CN Studios instead of RT.

FUNimation just released this Season 3 highlight reel! Yep, the nut punch is in there!

From what I can see in terms of 18-34, it sure is, at least for known 18-34 ratings since the beginning of 2018. It just edged out the previous lowest 11-11:30 retention percentage, 47.3%, occurring on August 3rd--the night gen:LOCK premiered. What's interesting is the other 6 episodes averaged a fairly respectable 64.4%, and that beats out AOTS3's 61.3%. So why were the first episode and the last duds? Did viewers in the young adult demographic already KNOW these episodes would be cut for time, enough to make such a large dent in viewership? And if that's the case, wouldn't a world premiere of a 2nd season pretty much negate those effects entirely? But I digress. We got more NUMBERS to talk about! https://programminginsider.com/saturday-final-ratings-georgia-vs-notre-dame-is-most-watched-college-football-game-on-cbs-since-2013/ 9/21/2019 - Total Viewers Show Viewers Retention DBZ Kai 309,000 DBS (R) 241,000 77.99% TOONAMI DBS (P) 682,000 Gen:LOCK 406,000 59.53% Dr. Stone 371,000 91.38% FireForce 343,000 92.45% FoodWars! 319,000 93.00% B. I'm willing to bet next week's DBS marathon has no show below 300K total viewers or 200K 18-49, but then again, the rerun isn't performing that well in the power hour. I guess we'll see...
-
Now now, we're not sure about that. I'm sure when all the data comes in (from Programming Insider) it will reveal that gen:LOCK actually performed quite a bit better than AOT Season 3. In fact, we DO have an idea: AOTS3 (not counting Episode #57 rerun) average: 377,700 total viewers; 234,300 adults 18-49; and 125,800 adults 18-34 (estimated) gen:LOCK average: 413,250 total viewers (+9.4%); 270,625 adults 18-49 (episode 8 estimated; +15.5%); and 149,625 adults 18-34 (estimated; +18.9%) Is that enough for a Season 2 in this day and age? Who knows...
-
Welp, gen:LOCK ended its run on Toonami with a bit of a THUD in Adults 18-34, casting hope for a Season 2 a bit further into doubt: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/showbuzzdailys-top-150-saturday-cable-originals-network-finals-9-21-2019.html Just missed at #52 was "Mobile Suit Gundam: Red Comet" with 235k/0.13 18-49, and at #68 was Lupin III Part 5 with 208k/0.10 18-49 While its retention of Dragon Ball Super's audience in total viewers and adults 18-49 were both pretty abysmal at 59.5% and 57.0% respectively, that for 18-34 was a level even worse than that. With a drop of a full 0.2 from 0.36 to 0.16, and from an estimated 245k adults 18-34 to just 109k, the audience plunged to only 44.5%. That's not a good omen if you were banking on Toonami co-producing a 2nd season. Also, this is the first time nothing after 3 AM has made the Top 50 since August 10th, when the earliest show to make it was Food Wars. Thus, Boruto's streak has continued into a 6th week, while Gundam's ends at 5 weeks. I guess it's pretty impressive that a network managed to get a show at 3 AM on the Top 50 for 5 consecutive weeks (and 7 total over the course of its run)!

DB Super Marathon on Sept 28th! :O
OwlChemist81 replied to The1gairon's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Theoretically, Fire Force doesn't NEED to take a week off, as if it didn't, the closest we would be is an episode airing the Saturday after its Friday FUNimation premiere. But man, I tell you, if I were Japanese and I were into this show, I'd be PISSED! TWO breaks during its premiere run makes it...like any show on Toonami airing October through December! -
There is also the outside chance this show gets an uncut re-run on the back end or even a marathon, when no one would be pissed off their favorite show is airing 15 minutes later. So, they could show all the unaired material then. At least that would be fair. I think his show deserves it, especially its first and last episodes. ESPECIALLY last Saturday's, because right before the commercial break, Chase burned through his uptime, but after the break, he was already back to the battle! What happened there??? Suggestion: Rerun gen:LOCK after Lupin (if Lupin moves to 3) at 3:30 or 4 AM, with 45-minute timeslots for episodes 1 and 8, and show EVERYTHING this time. (Episodes 2-7 would air just as they did during the premiere run). ESPECIALLY if you're serious about producing a 2nd season, Toonami!
-
To be fair, they counted down the minutes on the old dub of Dragon Ball Z, but they DON'T do that in Kai! https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/dragon-ball-super/episode-129/.128517 Grade: "B". Not gonna lie, I expected just a little better for this one, but the next two are going to be DYNAMITE!!! After all, these two episodes are the ones that packed stadia for bootleg streams in Latin American countries!

https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/lupin-the-third-part-5/episode-15/.134377 Grade: "B+". The reviewer makes some great points about this being an episode that really defines Lupin and Fujiko's relationship, and if that's the central focus of Part 5, that would be pretty cool! Too bad we have to wait 2 weeks now until this story reaches its conclusion--or is it 3? I wonder how many episodes this "EPISODE" has...

ONEPUNCH MAN SEASON 2 OCTOBER 12TH! (DEMON SLAYER TOO!)
OwlChemist81 replied to 3ngag3's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Thanks. I found another source which corroborates it. Of course, this changes my projection thus: September 20-21: Episode 11 airs in Japan, dub produced by FUNi NOW; Episode 9 airs on Toonami September 27-28: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW or on Toonami due to DBS marathon October 4-5: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW but Episode 10 airs on Toonami October 11-12: Fire Force returns in Japan/on FUNi NOW with Episode 12, and Episode 11 airs on Toonami So, when all the smoke clears, going forward it looks like Fire Force will be a week behind Japan and FUNi NOW on Toonami. -
DB Super Marathon on Sept 28th! :O
OwlChemist81 replied to The1gairon's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I found a source, and while it's very suspicious, I have no reason to believe any of this is a lie: https://www.monstersandcritics.com/anime/fire-force-episode-12-release-date-delayed-enen-no-shouboutai-anime-tv-broadcast-schedule-hiatus/ So it seems Fire Force actually returns in Japan on October 11th, which revises my projection thus: September 20-21: Episode 11 airs in Japan, dub produced by FUNi NOW; Episode 9 airs on Toonami September 27-28: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW or on Toonami due to DBS marathon October 4-5: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW but Episode 10 airs on Toonami October 11-12: Fire Force returns in Japan/on FUNi NOW with Episode 12, and Episode 11 airs on Toonami, so it's effectively one week behind Japan/FUNi NOW when it used to be two. If it gets behind, Dr. Stone can be doubled-up again. Another interesting note I learned about Fire Force: its timeslot in Japan is "25:25" on Friday nights, which is effectively 1:25 AM Saturday morning (episode 12 is airing 15 minutes later at 1:40 AM). So even though it's a different night of the week, this might be the first show on Toonami since InuYasha: The Final Act to actually get a better timeslot in the U.S. than in Japan. IY:TFA ran between 12:30 and 2 AM, with most episodes airing at 1:30, on Toonami, but aired Saturdays at "26:20," effectively 2:20 AM Sunday morning, in Japan, so it was better in the U.S. by at least 20 minutes, and sometimes even as much as almost 2 hours (110 minutes). Fire Force, of course airs at 12:30 AM, which is better by 55 minutes, and the first 4 episodes aired at 12 AM, or 125 minutes, earlier than in Japan. -
ONEPUNCH MAN SEASON 2 OCTOBER 12TH! (DEMON SLAYER TOO!)
OwlChemist81 replied to 3ngag3's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Please post your source. I don't see ANYTHING about this on ANN. https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=21852 I even half-spoiled myself with Episode 11's review but I couldn't see it mentioned there. Seems to me like you're just making stuff up. Either way, this has nothing to do with Toonami's new shows. But Fire Force would only be interrupted on the 28th by the marathon, and if this is true, could actually air on Toonami a day after Japan starting with Episode 12: September 20-21: Episode 11 aired in Japan, dub produced by FUNi NOW; Episode 9 aired on Toonami September 27-28: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW or on Toonami October 4-5: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW but Episode 10 airs on Toonami October 11-12: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW but Episode 11 airs on Toonami October 18-19: Fire Force returns in Japan/on FUNi NOW with Episode 12, which airs the next night on Toonami! -
DB Super Marathon on Sept 28th! :O
OwlChemist81 replied to The1gairon's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Given that Adult Swim is losing 8 PM on September 30th (and the first Saturday affected is October 5th), I wonder if that may have been the plan at first? A DBS mini-marathon of 127-130 leading-in to 131 would have been an interesting thing to try, especially if it set the tone for Dragon Ball Super airing in some of those timeslots as a rerun, but I guess that was scrapped. And Fire Force might not be as "Fire Fucked" as you think. An uncorroborated news story on its discussion mentions that it's gonna take a 3-week break in Japan from September 27th through October 11th. If that is indeed the case, the marathon may have been a necessary evil for that show as well: September 20-21: Episode #11 airs in Japan, dub produced by FUNi NOW; Episode #9 airs on Toonami September 27-28: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW or on Toonami October 4-5: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW but Episode #10 airs on Toonami October 11-12: No Fire Force in Japan/on FUNi NOW but Episode #11 airs on Toonami October 18-19: Fire Force returns in Japan/on FUNi NOW with Episode #12, which airs the next night on Toonami! If that's a stretch, I guess worst-case scenario they can just double-up Dr. Stone again... -
This series was a bizarre mixture of low-quality and high-quality, since the CG animation may have been underwhelming but the voice talent was top-dollar, even if somewhat not used to voice acting. Well, this is interesting. How about the WikiPedia synopsis of the last episode? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gen:Lock While preparing for their next skirmish, the gen:LOCK team receives a transmission from Migas, who reveals the Anvil and everyone inside is safe: the late Dr. Weller had figured out Union sympathizers were given a chip that could broadcast a signal to nanotech so that it would not affect them and manufactured a copy for the Vanguard that was put into effect when the Behemoth's nanotech attacked. He then reports that the Union is making another move in Chicago, and needs the gen:LOCK team's help. As the team prepares to leave, Dr. Jha lets Chase know that they're always welcome at RTASA and reassures him that Dr. Weller was proud. The team touches down at a pier in the South Side to draw Nemesis to them: after taking out some Union forces they are horrified to realize Nemesis has been upgraded with flight capabilities and nanotech that can repair any damage. The team uses mindshare to get an edge on Nemesis, but when this does not completely work they decide to all mindshare at once. Chase shows reluctance to do so, questioning what this means for him, but before they can try anything they receive a notification that they are almost at uptime and need to download. Chase chooses to stay in his Holon, exceeding uptime and leaving him unable to return to his body, in order to buy the rest of the group time. Nemesis and Chase continue their fight, but when Nemesis realizes how important the team is to Chase he heads to where their real bodies are in front of the Museum of Science and Industry. Before he can attack them, however, he is ambushed by Miranda and Jodie in their tanks, and Leon (who had earlier learned he was gen:LOCK compatible but too old for the program) using the Holon intended for Sinclair. Chase realizes without the limits of uptime he can mod himself and overclock his Holon without any consequences, and continues his fight with Nemesis, buying enough time for the rest of the team to upload back into their Holons. The entire gen:LOCK team engages in mindshare, using their combined skills to disable Nemesis's nanotech and damage him beyond repair. Before Chase destroys him for good, Nemesis hints that he was a mere copy of the real Chase's brain, and that the Union made many more. With the battle over Leon tries to download back into his body, but because of his age, the download is not entirely successful, leaving him in a coma that they cannot confirm he will ever get out of. Colonel Marin congratulates the team on helping them win the battle and offers them a chance to return to the Anvil. Chase has a talk with Miranda, who sadly remarks that the people they were four years ago died in the Battle of New York, but tells Chase not to be a stranger and that perhaps someday they can try things again. The gen:LOCK team decides to move their base of operations to RTASA, with Migas serving as their chief engineer and liaison to the Vanguard, and Leon moving there to aid in his recovery. In a post-credits scene, the real Robert Sinclair is revealed to be alive. His actions and appearance indicate that he may have escaped his captors and is now trying to find a way out of Union-controlled territory disguised as a Union soldier. Yep, thanks to the fact that the last episode was super-sized, we missed even MORE stuff in scenes cut for TV broadcast, including that post-credits scene. Forget a 2nd season for now. I'd rather Toonami re-airs Season 1 uncut at the back of the block first, expanding Toonami by 15 minutes twice to get all of the first and last episodes in! (The others could probably re-air in a 30-minute timeslot as normal.)
-
What in the world gave you THAT idea!? Every episode had an "actual battle" in it except Episodes 2 and 3. Episode 2 had hand-to-hand combat and espionage instead of a mecha battle, so the only episode that didn't have any true danger whatsoever was 3. Now now, we don't know that for sure. The implication of that scene with the multiple red copies of Chase was that this Nemesis they were fighting against...was merely a copy as well, and one of like several dozen! Perhaps in Season 2, we would have gotten an expanded gen:LOCK force vs. a whole army of Nemeses! Toonami, make it happen! And if there IS a Season 2 by RT or CN Studios, my suggestion is to build it to air on Toonami instead of online, which would mean a strict 22-minute runtime, but how many episodes? The whole first season as streamed by Rooster Teeth was 213 minutes 43 seconds, but subtract the OPs and you're down to 200 minutes 3 seconds of actual "show". Therefore if there is a made-for-TV 2nd season that is effectively the same length as the first, it would most likely be 10 episodes instead of 8 in a "made-for-TV" format. But of course there is no guarantee that Toonami would make the 2nd season the same length--or at all!

fire force Fire Force Episode 9 Discussion

Maki-Tamaki confusion in writing aside, it's fortunately pretty easy to tell them apart on-screen! https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/fire-force/episode-9/.150851 Rating: 2.5☆. Hopefully the next story arc is better!
