in 1992 Mattel decided they needed to make Ken "cooler" so they started doing marketing research of things they though 90's kids would think were cool, they decided "raves" were a thing that 90's kids thought were cool, so they started reasearching Rave fashion (which at the time Raves were EXTREMELY Gay) and ended up designing a Ken doll that looked like this

 

 

they named the doll "earring magic Ken" and it became the best selling Ken doll in history

 

because Gay men were buying it

 

when Mattel realized how Gay it was they discontinued it
