if his only contribution was dieing so that straight folks could live then it's kind of shit representation

stories where our lives aren't as important as straight people are a dime a dozen

He was a regular for most of the 13 issue series (the series literally opened with his wedding being interrupted by that infernal spider and killing his husband).  But in issue 10-ish, a new threat disrupted their plan and against the wishes of his teammates, he went back to defuse the bombs.  He did it knowing he might die but that it would save the city (it was Seattle or Vancouver or something).  He died an honorable death.  Which is more than I could say for the main protagonist who decided that dying trying to kill Godzilla (for idiotic reasons) was better than reconnecting with his son.

enough Gay people die pointless deaths in real life

is one story where we get to live and die of natural causes too much to ask?

later chapters reveal he's a sociopath....albeit a nice one

Except he cares about his friends and their feelings too much to be a sociopath. He's just a badly written and inconsistent character that does whatever the author thinks is cool at any given time.

The reason the current episodes are much better than the first 40 episodes is that aside from the better pacing and the fact that stuff actually happens.... Gon and Killua aren't in it.

And did you see the scene with Kurapica actually remembering his dead comrades despite the fact that he didn't know them long? Death was actually acknowledged as something that matters in HxH!

For that series, yes.  Since about 10% of people are LGBTQ, and about 50ish% of the population was killed, the odds don't add up.  You saw a lot of people die in that 3-series saga.  Hell, the first pages you see are a couple of children dying.  They didn't hesitate to hit below the belt.
