Jman Posted September 6 Posted September 6 Genndy’s interviews over the past few years are him taking the industry to task. Quote
Sketch Posted September 7 Posted September 7 Man he flat out said nobody but DIsney is making kids cartoons now... Yet another Genndy project that he slowly cooked for decades, he originally pitched the movie in 2008 and obviously the industry wasn't ready for that yet but the Sony exec at the time did like it but they got promoted and the next person didn't. Can you IMAGINE if this came out in 2010? Quote
Toonamiguy321 Posted September 8 Posted September 8 “Expert on dog boners and nutsacks feels the animation industry is declining” This would have been a good topic during Primal S2s run, not after dog testicle show. 5 hours ago, Sketch said: Can you IMAGINE if this came out in 2010? It likely would have went to proper theaters but gotten destroyed because competition for attention in theaters was fierce in 2010. Would have been squaring up with Harry Potter, Avatar, Inception, Iron Man 2, and quite a few other heavy hitters. I don’t think dog penis can compete with those. For a positive, it likely would not have been scrutinized as much. A movie that exists, is not good, and everyone just moves on. Genndy’s obsession with throbbing dog meat is only jokingly referenced now and then as his other projects release. Quote

You can not like or be interested in this particular movie of his and still agree with his points. The two are entirely separate things. Genndy's more than earned the right to make statements like this given his entire body of work. 1 2 Quote

My point is, he is talking about the decline as if he didn’t just contribute to said decline not even one month ago. The state of western animation is more than just the way it looks. Fixed has that animation flare we come to expect from Genndy. But then content wise it’s about dog schlong and just becomes another reason in the pile for why the west is falling miles behind on animation. Quote
Jman Posted September 8 Author Posted September 8 (edited) There’s only so much even the greatest auteurs can do when the only animation being made in-house these days are video game adaptations desperately pretending to be Japanese but failing because the boobs are all too small, or vehicles for comedians who don’t want to do stand up comedy tours. And make no mistake, Genndy is one of the last great auteurs from that era that is still active and hasn’t been disgraced. Even American comics are begging people to have Japanese studios animate them. Over the past few months, there’s been rumors Robert Kirkman’s (Invincible, Walking Dead) next big project will be an adaptation of his Energon Universe comics. And everyone has made it clear they want Studio Trigger to animate it, not the people who are doing Invincible. To me that’s telling that everyone thinks Western studios suck that much ass (and Trigger has repeatedly asked to do a Transformers project) that people want them to do Transformers and G.I. Joe. I mean it's not about dog schlong it's about dog testicles. Really it's the animated equivalent to 40 Year Old Virgin and you have to admit if nothing else that's novel for animation even today. And it's not playing safe with something like Family Guy or Rick & Morty and it's tremendously better done than Sausage Party. Much better visual gags and much better dialogue. Genndy certainly understands dogs and funny things about their behavior and leans hard into that. 1 Quote
[classic swim] Posted Friday at 05:40 AM Posted Friday at 05:40 AM Dialogue different than Sausage Party? ...Are you sure we watched the same movie? And how up to task is it really to write all the proper and cohesive jokes there is about dogs? ”I just left a mess in your chair.” Boom. You’re done. Quote

Yeah, I'm not really interested in watching Fixed even as a curiosity, but to claim it "contributed to the decline of animation" is just stupid. Genndy's created some of the most acclaimed American animated series of the past 25 years. He's more than earned the right to cut loose on a batshit insane personal project about dog balls. 1 Quote
Jman Posted Friday at 12:47 PM Author Posted Friday at 12:47 PM (edited) As big a whiff as Fixed was, blaming that for Western Animation's problems and not the migration of the audience to Japanese animation, increasingly expensive personal projects that flop at the box office and on streaming (Oh hai Eilo), and writers that feel increasingly focused on personal grievances and an existing audience that agrees with their beliefs over any sort of broader fandom feels misguided at best. When a bunch of 40 and 50somethings are asking me, the (relative) kid of the group what the hell Demon Slayer is because there are ads for the movie all over cabs, but the next production from the Owl House lady after that flopped is an indie show mostly about her whining that Disney saw Owl House was unpopular and canceled it, that to me does more damage to Western animation than the dog balls movie. When Netflix's big next project is Ricky Gervais (who I can't really stand, the self-righteous prick), gets his animated project which is literally just "Fixed with cats" greenlit because he's a comedian with some clout, that hurts more than an artist-driven movie, even if it is about dog balls. You can’t have one without the other. Anyway, you are correct, I haven’t watched it. I have a policy about watching garbage. I just don’t do it. But lucky me, a clip of the movie popped into my Instagram doomscrolling, so I gave it a try. Maybe I was wrong? No, I wasn’t. Because the clip I saw was a prolonged scene of the main dog having gay sex with another dog, while confessing(?) to a female dog I assume he did not get to have sex with. I went ahead and closed it at about that point, reassured in my conviction that this is a bad movie. 17 hours ago, Top Gun said: Yeah, I'm not really interested in watching Fixed even as a curiosity, but to claim it "contributed to the decline of animation" is just stupid. Trying to figure out the “decline of western animation” translates to “why does everyone prefer anime now”. I already conceded that animation wise, Fixed does its job. Even from that short clip I saw, it had that Genndy animation style that only he can deliver. But story wise? It’s Sausage Party-lite. This is where the west falls flat. Animation is either Fox slop generic, which can have some good laughs but is visually boring, or it looks good but is a vulgar sex comedy. Meanwhile, over at anime town, you can get whatever you want. Vulgar sex comedy? Can do. Want a few laughs? No problem. Serious action? Yes sir. An intro to some niche sport or hobby? Yes for some reason. The east offers it all, the west offers almost nothing. And that’s what has brought us to the point where the western animation industry is barely hanging on by a thread. As for earning it, I’d probably turn a blind eye to this movie if Genndy didn’t have so many recent fumbles. Jack ending? Atrocious and ripped off Gurren Lagann. Primal? Right down the tubes when Spear learned his first and only word. UWE? A napkin idea that should have stayed on the napkin. Quote
