If someone is supposed to be on psych meds then it is probably not a good idea to be using other recreational psychoactive substances.

Contraindications and complications are real.

What and what? You’re going to have to explain

Yeah, I’ve heard that from people in support groups for addiction. It’s really just a matter of choice if you are anxious or depressed.

I’ve known people that hurt themselves because of that advice. It’s very bad advice

If you are taking medications for mental health it is a good idea to abstain from taking other recreational drugs (unless your doctor says otherwise). A lot of recreational drugs can have contraindications with prescribed mental health medications, or even worsen the condition.

That sounds like stupid 12 step program doo-doo

12 step programs and AA are essentially glorified religious cults, no?

If you can stop an opioid or alcohol problem with something like marijuana, then why not? Marijuana is still not good for you, but it is far more innocuous than alcohol and opiates. They still let you smoke tobacco in those groups, yes? Tobacco could arguably be worse than marijuana.

They’re mostly full of shit hypocrites that think if you’re not staying clean their way you won’t stay clean. I’m proof that ain’t true at all.

The object I was pointing out was that speaking to an addiction specialist or aa member about a medication issue is going to have different outcomes than that of a psychiatrist or pharmacist. Maybe getting high shouldn’t be the message, the video and it’s admirable hooks aside. But I like not feeling bad so bottoms up.

All of the people who I have known personally that went through it had to do so only because it was court ordered.

While I will not discourage someone from finding something that works for them, those groups tend to seem like glorified cults to me. Some people have claimed they needed it and it changed their life, and more power to them, but there are probably better, healthier ways to accomplish the same things or better.

I think a lot of them basically make you have faith or believe in god IIRC and that just seems asinine to me.

If you ever achieve the level of PhD in any pursuit of science than I will gladly accept your advice. There are more naysayers than you can shake a stick at on both sides of the fence. I am only pointing out a GRAND ineptitude in society in that when one addiction is given up, another inevitably takes it’s place. A sick duality.

I actually do, though it is in mathematics. I know very little about mental health, biology, etc.

But I have to agree that many people who are addicts tend to trade one addiction for another. That is what some of the people I have spoken with who have been in groups have described to me.

Also, never take what I say as advice unless I strictly state it to be. This is just my opinions on the matter. The stuff about not mixing drugs and medications is pretty common knowledge though

I was just too young for it. I would never recommend it for anyone under 20. A lot of people get clean and then they realize what a disgusting person they are anyway and they prey on young addicts lookin for a wiser, older, and drug free person to look up to.  And yeah it’s a belief in a higher power. Nothing is in your control and everything you do should be turned over to a higher power as you understand them. Some say “derrp it can even be a chair” like fuckin stfu. You know what I mean?  If you wanna claim no control over your life and what happens around you, that you’re gonna use a chair as the thing you want to guide you….just fuckin smoke a joint. Just really ridiculous cult shit. They even have retreats and shit.

Absolutely but at least an addiction specialist shouldn’t be on team “psychiatric drugs are bad” also they should recognize that it’s outside their scope of practice to make suggestions on psychiatric diagnoses unless they have a degree that allows them to do so. Most don’t
