Live action Gundam movie moving forward with Netflix and Kong: Skull Island director

Netflix continues to try the corner a market no one else is focused on and Roberts now has another giant robot movie to work on (he’s directing Metal Gear).

Between this, Sony throwing all that money to get Robotech going again, and rumors Universal wants to restart production on a Voltron movie with Michael Bay as director, the next few years may have a lot of giant robot films.

NO.

Yeah, tell Sunrise and Legendary that.  Sure they’ll listen.

Casting is of course pending but now that the world is slowly restarting maybe we’ll hear something at one of the virtual conventions.

And I ain’t going to front, I want to see Michael Bay Voltron just to have the opposite of the awful Dreamworks show.

The world locking down, restarting, and locking down again, apparently doesn't stop Hollywood from greenlighting near the same amount of shows/movies. Typical American ignorance.

If Netflix is willing to throw $400 million at Rian Johnson for 2 Knives Out sequels, this thing's definitely getting some real money.

It has to take place in the UC timeline. Could definitely make some award-baity parallels to our current world that way, which = word of mouth from non-Gundam nerds, which = ???, which = Profit!

Spoiler

Imagine Biden screening a fucking Gundam movie at the White House. What a world...

Gundam is a weird property for a movie because it’s a series that explores the complexities of global conflicts, but while that’s easy to flesh out in a TV show, you just get quickly introduced to a world and armies that you couldn’t bother to care about within a two hour story.

If it’s from the original series, you’ll get a hyper-condensed Amuro vs Char story that gets teased out into the sequel (if there is one).

If it’s original material, you have the challenge of fleshing out a new conflict and you have a F91 situation where you couldn’t give half a fuck about anyone that isn’t the main character no matter how much effort they build into creating 115 minutes worth of lore.

Or it could be another G-Saviour... 🤢
