Cats and dogs having been 'domesticated' for as long as they have, it's impossible that they haven't developed language understanding. Especially cats since their brains are wired almost identically to humans as far as which portions do what and how much of an area is used to process certain info.

They are just smart enough to know that us knowing they know would require them to actually contribute to the household chores instead of pooping on the carpet when the litterbox isn't acceptable enough and then trying to roll and look cute. Not working, furball. Your predecessor would go get a plastic bag and bring it to me if she didn't like the state of things and when she was bored, she'd get the tv remote and turn it on to surf until something interesting caught her attention. Your superpower appears to be turning into the amazing cat-loaf and hosting ultimate spider fights in the hallway when you think I'm sleeping.

Mine at least will spot "bad bugs" and much like Max Von Sydow's Ming the Merciless, "play with things awhile, before annihilation".

Mine will occasionally destroy one that falls into the tub before I find it. I've caught her in there smiling away with twitching legs sticking out of her mouth way too many times for comfort.

Otherwise, form of cat-loaf.
