Winter_Rain
So. I got busy with life, kind of lost interest in anime and engaged in other interests and life events for the last couple years. Recently, I started feeling nostalgic and getting more involved with community again. I haven't watched Toonami for some time, and shows have come/gone or are up to a high episode count now. This is rather daunting for me and I'm not sure where to start. I am already familiar with JoJo and Shippuden. I got partway through HxH and Kai when I was still following Toonami, but would need to catch up. So are any of the currently airing shows "must watch" material? Daos
MMMM...... no. Not even slightly. You're gonna want to watch Super in about.. 50 episodes though.
EmpressAngel
Not sure how many years you've missed but here's some opinions from like, 2015-now Yes: One Punch Man Michiko and Hatchin Kill la Kill Samurai Jack final season Maybe: Hunter x Hunter (good but a real time commitment) Parasyte (started cool but had a pretty meh ending) Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans (I have no strong feelings on this either way) Lupin the Third Italian Adventure (good but probably skippable if you're not already into Lupin) Dimension W (not that good but at least it's short) Gundam Unicorn (it didn't hold my interest at all but I know other people liked it) Trash, save yourself: Akame ga Kill Sword Art Tokyo Ghoul Black Clover

Blatch
I'm mostly in agreement with @EmpressAngel's list. I would also recommend Samurai Champloo and Outlaw Star if you haven't already seen them. However, Dragon Ball Super wasn't mentioned, and that is an interesting beast. Skip the movie recap arcs at all costs, and watch the original versions if you care about those stories that much. The Universe 6 vs. 7 Tournament is decent fun but probably not neccessary, while the currently-running Future Trunks saga is probably the best the show has to offer... of course, you're going to want to stop watching it an episode or two from the end.
Daos
He specifically asked about currently airing shows though, and is already familiar with Jojo and HxH. So my answer of "no" stands =P Kai is almost over. Super is kinda worth watching atm but still not that great. Gundam is halfway through it's second season and not worth watching to start with unless you just enjoy any mecha anime. Black Clover... that's gonna be a no. Naruto... only if you already like Naruto. The rest of the lineup is half finished reruns.... you can check out Dandy since it's not really linear or anything. Some new shows should be starting in the next month or two, check back for those!
OwlChemist81
Gundam IBO is not halfway through its season--it's only 3 episodes before the end! Since Gundam IBO is nearing its end, I'd start there. Then next would be Kai if you care about that. The only "must see" show on Toonami you might need to catch up on other than those two is Hunter x Hunter. But as for legacy shows that aren't currently airing for the past 3 years: Kill la Kill; Michiko & Hatchin; Parasyte -the maxim-; Samurai Champloo; One-Punch Man; Gundam Unicorn; Samurai Jack's Final Season; Attack on Titan Season 2; and Lupin the 3rd Part 4; and Outlaw Star are all worth watching. PurgatoryGirl
It's best to watch a show on your own without the negative bias of others. Shows that you may like, others will nit pick and scrutinize it to death because it's not to their personal liking and have to hang onto the words of Anime critics, who think they're Siskel & Ebert. Go into watching a show with an open mind. Then, form your own opinions without the bias of those, who spend time obsessing over ratings and counting ratings on their fingers and toes.
OwlChemist81
I tried to be positive and not say "don't watch these shows", but instead, "watch these shows." It really has nothing to do with ratings, but rather my opinion which were the good ones.
PurgatoryGirl
Generally speaking, ASMB's community has serious problems. I can only withstand this çommunity in very small doses by mostly lurking, posting, and leaving. When most ASMB posters aren't bitching about entertainment, they're incessantly bitching and fighting over politics and about how miserable their lives are as people. Otherwise, they troll posters they have a personal hatred for and revel in making someone's life a living hell to the extent, that they are forced to completely disassociate from the community. OwlChemist81
Which is why I strive to be a voice of general positivity, or at least, "optimistic objectivity". I'm usually the one in the ratings thread who strives to put a positive spin on whatever the news is weekly. After all, even on the worst week, you can usually only go downhill from there. Now sometimes I say "I ain't gonna sugarcoat it" before I talk about something truly wretched and my disdain for it, but those times are few and far between. I know Jason DeMarco and co. are working their butts off to build us a better cartoon show and damn right I'm gonna show my appreciation for it!
Daos
I thought the fight scenes in Akame alone made it worthwhile. The fight against Esdeath at the end was definitely one of the top fights of the year =P SAO is still a good gateway anime for getting people into anime, like it or not. OwlChemist81
You're right that Akame ga KILL!'s fights were well choreographed, and SAO II was generally an improvement on the first season. Episodes 16-21 had the best action in the series so far!
Daos
Plus it's Studio White Fox, they did Jormugand, Re Zero and Stein's Gate. Everything they do looks amazing. Looking forward to their upcoming Goblin Slayer adaption. A lot of people hate on Akame but I think they did the best they could given that the source material was not only unfinished but unshowable on TV. Can you show testicles being crushed and mass rape and little girls being raped by rapid dogs on TV? Probably not.
OwlChemist81
Really now? Now I'm REALLY hoping we get Re Zero to replace Gundam IBO! Only thing is, would that be enough of a "surprise" at this point?

Yeah, I can definitely agree with this. If you're not being too critical about things, then SAO overall is pretty enjoyable. I still genuinely enjoy the Aincrad Arc and personally thing that, barring anything else, it would work really well on it's own as a one cour series. Winter_Rain
I now realize I have either seen/read most of the Toonami series. My power levels were higher than I remembered. Damn, now I feel like a weeb.

Winter_Rain
@OwlChemist81 To be honest, your positivity is why I like you, even though your posts are really ridiculous and out there sometimes. No matter what anyone says to you, you never seem to get triggered. An anti-troll of sorts.

Trust me, I'm quite familiar with the Toonami regulars and their...unique charms. I can't say I have really had too many issues with them personally, I come here because I have met some very interesting people from this community, and because I like to talk to other people I share this interest with. I don't expect their tastes or opinions to align with mine, and life would be pretty boring if that were the case. I enjoy knowing what other people think, and if there is a general consensus, that helps me narrow things down. That's what it boils down to for me.
