Well we saw people disappear as sparkles before, it's close enough. We definitely got a sense of souls leaving when Cardinal and Eugeo died. Yeah I thought they were going for scientific souls with the brain stuff... but they are real because Miller saw that one in the real world. Well, there have been things like Asuna breaking the game with the power of love to run across the map and save Kirito from that murder guild guy back in Aincrad.

In their few minutes of screen time they are better characters than the likes of Silica and Lisbeth. And probably some of the only decent people in that Dark Territory. But yes, sets the stakes and shows Miller is not to be fucked with.
