The Toonami Ratings Thread 1.0 :You are on a new board
ben0119 replied to StarPanda's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Well, looking at the list, it seems the top animes are all either Attack on Titan or Boruto, so probably not too much to be concerned with. I live in a small suburban community. I don't care for all the big cities with all the chaos and busy-ness, and random crazies, hipsters, hobos, hippies, etc. I mean, hell, look at somebody the wrong way and you might jumped! But I don't want to live in the middle of nowhere, either. I lived in south Texas until kindergarten and moved to central Texas for first grade and have lived here since. I dread having to go back there to visit relatives. South Texas is depressing and boring as hell. It's a fucking backwater, nothing there. You feel like you're going back in time, not in a good way. And Corpus Christi is a rundown shithole, basically a mini-Detroit of the south. Even when I lived a few years out of town up here it was annoying. You have to drive into town to do anything. And even then, when we lived in town, we'd have to go to a larger town or city nearby for other stuff. I'm glad the small city I'm living in now has grown large enough to have actual stuff and not have to go somewhere else to do things. I mean, yeah, I love nature, but I don't want to live in it. Heh, got on a bit of a rant there. But I see what you mean. Hicks in and of themselves aren't necessarily bad (though they seem to have bad taste in anime ), but I don't want to live in the middle of nowhere. There's also the fact I don't drive so I appreciate being able to walk or ride a bike anywhere I need to go and everything isn't too far away from me where I live. Still, I just can't get how there's still a demand for Naruto. It's been shit longer than it's been good, at this point. And even if Boruto itself might not be bad, it still feels tainted to me. I dunno'. I mean, why give a shit about the next generation of Naruto characters when the original characters' story has been ruined? -

Exactly. As long as the thing I like can continue to air, I don't care what ratings it gets. Obviously, it'd be nicer if more people shared in watching something I like, but I'm not going to lose sleep over being part of a comparatively small audience. If Toonami gets canceled that'd be pretty catastrophic for me. I've been talking about the ASA/Toonami block online since 03. And yeah it's a good way of watching anime. Better than just going into the woods for yourself and trying to pick something to watch. Toonami helps bridge that gap. I don't think these latest developments put the block in any existential danger right this minute, but they sure as hell aren't good. And again, I want a new show to watch at the top of the block, not a rerun. So if the ratings for a rerun do bad, or a show I don't like that I believe shouldn't have been picked up, then I'll use that to back up my argument. Believe it or not there was for some reason some pervasive demand on the boards years ago that Toonami air Steins Gate, even though it's not an action show from what I have heard and wouldn't work for Toonami. Ping Pong was well liked but nobody really recommended it for Toonami. I just looked up the last show. Oh lord. -
I tend to agree a lot with this guy's take on things. Still not sure if the real/main reason was Kubo's health or the magazine axing it, but fuck Jump regardless. Unfortunate about those notes getting lost though. I'm sure it's not the only mangaka that's happened to, though. Shit happens.

Those omakes, along with similarly toned filler episodes, are based on bonus segments from the manga, though, so I wouldn't really call this a different version of the characters. For example, there have been similar humorous moments with Byakuya in the main series. Maybe different circumstances or events, etc. The omakes are a glimpse of their daily lives, so the characters aren't going to act the same as they would in the heat of battle, etc. I also like the added lore and world building contained in them. I binged all these omakes some time ago. They're pretty great.

Who give a fuck about pairings? The manga was mostly loveless, with these couples being barely, if at all, built up over the course of it. They go from not even holding hands to having babies at the end. The romance happens during a timeskip. It's like placing two action figures beside each other. Kubo would always say that he doesn't do romances because he felt there were better and more interesting things he could do with the characters. Then he breaks his rule at the end and has the romance happen off-screen to effectively have his cake and eat it too. I care more about the development and accomplishments of the characters themselves. I think Rukia did pretty well for herself and ended up in a good place by the end of the series. Orihime on the other hand got unfortunately shafted in a lot of ways. Remember that whole thing of her rejecting the Hogyoku and nothing ever coming of it? It would have been nice if she got more to do. I mean, if didn't have the heart of a fighter and wasn't suited for it, fine, but I still felt like she didn't do enough, even in a non-fighting role.
-
That's not the only things that were out of control. Grimmjow was originally meant to die fairly quickly (a one fight villain, I imagine), but his role was extended due to his popularity. Kubo wanted to kill off some good guys in the Fake Karakura Town Arc but was stopped because editors thought it would hurt sales. They rushed him to end the Substitute Arc and move on to Soul Society because they felt it was too similar to Yu Yu Hakusho. Regardless of that, Substitute Arc is great and shouldn't have been able to go as long as Kubo wanted. And there's plenty of other examples. Kubo probably had more freedom with the last arc because the series was winding down at that point, and I'm thankful for many of the things he got to do with that arc.

I loved Bleach since the beginning and always have. It's got one of the best first episodes of any long running Shonen and draws you in right off the bat. One of my favorite series, for sure. Not going to say it was a perfect series or that the quality was consistent, but I definitely don't agree with all the people that say it took a nosedive after the Soul Society Arc or that it should have ended there, etc. Yes, The Arc Which Shall Not Be Named was so bad that I blocked most of it from my memory, but I'll stand by most of the canon material any day. Lots of great and epic moments come after the Soul Society Arc, and lots of characters get their due and time in the spotlight. I was loyal up to the end and I anxiously hope a new anime to cover the final arc comes to pass.

Dragon Ball Super Episode 20 Discussion

It's because Frieza was a natural prodigy and never needed to train. He was just naturally that skilled and powerful. So maybe that's why it only takes 4 months for him level up that much? -

Well, as said, I don't really give a shit about the ratings, but if it affects my viewing enjoyment and the ratings back me up, then I'm going to make those arguments. Wut? -

What proof is there of any of this TOEI strong-arming? You have no proof that Toonami is locked to keeping any shows into particular time slots. I think maybe you guys just need to accept that Adult Swim is retarded. And their shitty scheduling seems to be infecting and taking over Toonami's once rather logical scheduling. It's looking more and more like ASA idiocy all the time. I can't even say it's "fine as a placeholder" because the ratings damage is pretty severe. Would Toonami even keep this slot long enough to bring in whatever Jack is supposedly keeping the slot warm for? It's a colossal misstep. They never should have done this in the first place. It doesn't make sense to "hold" slots for another show. They should have no issue purchasing and negotiating a show on time to bring in whenever another show ends. Maybe whatever it is wouldn't be "worthy" of the slot, but that whole notion seems pretty stupid, especially since they didn't put Attack on Titan there. To me, this seems more deliberate and they just thought Jack would do as well or slightly less better in reruns than it did in premieres, which after what happened with the AoT rerun debacle, and seeing these results, we know is obviously not the case. Placing the blame for the decision on programming or Adult Swim proper doesn't help numb the incompetence, either. Besides, with how well things had been going up until now, you'd think they'd defer to Toonami on some of this stuff more. Demarco and co. were the architect of this block and the renaissance and growth of anime on Adult Swim, after all. I can honestly see either party being responsible though, given Demarco's insistence on unwarranted marathon spam, among other things. -

Well, I don't care about ratings, unless they get bad enough that something I'm watching gets canceled. Also, I want a new show in the opening slot and not a rerun, and the ratings bomb of last Saturday bolsters my position. -

There's hicks in Pennsylvania? Well, I suppose if you go far enough north, you run into Canada and places like the Dakotas, which are full of hicks, so I suppose it's possible. -

Yeah it used to be I had one, two, or no shows on the block I didn't like. Now it's most of them. That's just not good. Even with my prior reasons given of having too much other stuff on my plate in terms of watching, gaming, and reading material, I can't continue to tolerate watching mostly crap anime with no other [quality] anime content to make up for it. Demarco had said they don't need those now because of the channel guides, which didn't exist back in the old days. I do agree the bumps need to be updated more often and we need more promos and topicals, extras, etc. -

It didn't help that Moose was one of the people hard-selling it. I also was iffy on the art style but got over that pretty quickly. And Meliodas looking dorky has a reason in the context of the story. -

Hmm, for TX... Attack on Titan Season 2. Fine. *looks up Akashic Records* What the fuck is wrong with you people? And yeah I wouldn't be surprised if the Toonami bungling continues. -

SAOII got dubbed and on Toonami pretty fast. They actually started dubbing it before it even finished airing in Japan. -

*googles* I must have missed that. -
Obviously cameos yes but the show made a point of drawing attention to it, and like you said, Full Frontal was the main antagonist, so his death is obviously going to be closely looked at by viewers. This is why I was asking wtf was up with those ghosts. I agree with you about Bright Noa, though. He was established well here. Probably an epilogue episode, though it's probably not going to be enough to wrap up all this stuff. We'll see. Also, there's still the matter of the giant death beam the President authorized. I hope Riddhe's bullshit doesn't gets swept under the rug, at least. Plenty of other characters that need their just desserts as well (don't know their names). Not sure if this can all happen with just one more episode, but I'm not exactly sad that tomorrow is the last episode, either.

Lupin the 3rd Comes to Toonami June 17th

Believe me, I get what you mean. I once had a self-imposed rule of never making consecutive posts. I used to multi-quote on the Lithium boards, but eventually decided this was too messy and too difficult, overwhelming to read. Making the responses as actual separate posts directly addressed to the user being replied to is cleaner, more organized, easier to read, and more respectful to the individual users you're replying to. Also easier to quote and reply to than one, giant mega-post. -
There's another, currently final, arc that's longer than all the others. I've tried not to read up too much on the Alicization Arc so I don't get spoiled, since I don't see myself reading through all the novels right this minute. Anyway, all the web novels for that arc have been adapted and published as light novels (the higher canon) some time ago now, so there is nothing stopping them from being adapted into anime form. I imagine the only reason we haven't seen seen it yet are because those resources were devoted to making the movie.

It's episodic and easy to get into. You could probably jump in anywhere.
