Yeah idk all the specifics but there’s blame going around cuz budget cuts led to the inability to do control burns, or to do them as often as necessary. This fire probably wasn’t started by a runaway cigarette butt, but if it was, that person should go to jail. Inmates take the job because it pays way more than any other job. It’s slave labor. if they work less than 24 hours I think they make $10 for their time. It should not be legal to pay someone a pittance for what people normally get paid good money to do.

The inmates aren’t forced but to get paid $26.90 for 24 hours fighting a California wildfire doesn’t seem right to me. By all means do the program but don’t pay them, what could be about $1 an hour. If paying them a firefighter wage is too offensive than at least pay min wage.

The program in California only excludes sex offenders, arsonists and anyone with more than 8 years left on their sentences
