I was running out of joke anime so I put a good one in there.

It is, and in the anime. They're just changing it because they're assholes. They just sit around like "WHAT IF HE WASN'T EVIL WHAT IF HE WAS REALLY GOOD ALL ALONG" But... he was evil. They clearly already established what happened. How horrible a writer are you if you can't work around an already established backstory and have to make up a bunch of new nonsense? Toriyama doesn't care though so anything goes.
