There's been all this talk during the strike that streamers and studios have different end goals. Streamers were built by tech and have different revenue models than studios and creative. There is definitely compatibility. Many years ago, hollywood studios and theaters had monopolies on distribution and actors and writers signed with studios and often couldn't leave even if they weren't working. They could only do films at their home studio, etc. And no one else could get stuff up on screens (independents, small studios, etc). Streamers pay their staff, writers, actors, etc less than anywhere else. (Getting a job on a FreeVee show apparently pays less than minimum wage) When HBO Max renamed to Max it got to disconnect itself from cable/broadcast and pay streaming fees only. It also got to pay streaming residuals instead of broadcast residuals. Max is part of Warner (see list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_assets_owned_by_Warner_Bros._Discovery) Streamers will pay residuals now (yay strike!) but many of them are on the FCC and FTC radar for being monopolies. The quote in the article "“The rise of innovative, new video streaming services is an American success story we should celebrate and encourage, not smother with obsolete and ill-fitting rules and regulations designed for completely different technology, products and business models. Viewers have never gotten more for their entertainment dollar, and I urge policymakers to resist any effort to curtail this hugely beneficial innovation. Let’s not allow some backwards-looking regulatory scheme to block gains consumers so strongly value and appreciate today.” ^That's misleading - where is a new app supposed to get traction? I don't love the cable model but they were required to carry a certain number of emerging options - This alliance is saying it's for us the consumer, but they really want to have carte blanche to own the content and the pipelines with very little room for other businesses to break in. Bad summary, my brain isn't braining today.

Thanks for that I only have ONE MORE ROUND TO GO so I'm feeling excited. (Realizing I shared that probably without any prior context on these boards. I'm in remission, these are maintenance rounds, and they were scheduled for a year - last one in Oct) -
What song is stuck in your head right now?

Yeah, I can't quite figure that one out - It's another WGA show, but they are using already-created material and recycled material. Contestants aren't (usually) union folks, and any production with existing material when the strike started was allowed to complete production as long as nothing new was written (like no edits on the day which is normal) - and those productions still had issues because the wga picketed and other unions wouldn't cross effectively shutting down production. Mayim isn't hosting because she's in SAG (which is what we'd expect from Drew too) And Jeopardy didn't get a carve out, nor did Barrymore or Maher - like some of the awards shows have by coming to agreements with the writers on what would and wouldn't be allowed. Maybe that's the difference with the shows that are getting crap, they're doing it without making wga agreements. ETA: Oh! And I think it's all part of the spirit of the strike vs the rule of the strike. No content means no content. Is it painful for advertisers, networks, studios, consumers, etc - yes, and it's not supposed to be easy. The fact that it's hard/challenging demonstrates the worth the writers and actors bring. ETA (2nd): So Maher is IN the WGA, so even without his show writers, he is explicitly not supposed to work for struck companies. Period. And SAG says Barrymore's show isn't struck SAG content, but I'll reiterate, SAG didn't say this: it is WGA struck content, and SAG isn't supposed to cross. -

I think it was accepted - some old news articles make it sound like the networks might have forced their hands, but the wga statement said no writing, no monologues, etc. I think the hosts were considered allies, crews got paid - but no one wrote. If I recall, SAG wasn't striking at the same time either. So in Barrymore's case, she's a union member, she actually has an obligation to SAG not to cross the WGA picket. Any actor who appears could be in trouble too - Thing is I remember the news of it last time, but since I'm both acting and writing now (non union with aspirations) I'm paying a different kind of attention. -

They intentionally made bad/boring shows - so they were on the air, but it was meant to show how much impact the writers had. Like, Conan spun his wedding band for a bit... -

Always been more of a night person, but I'm all over the place right now. Left to my own devices I'd go to bed between 2-3a and wake up at 11am, but the 9-5 world doesn't like that. I'm not working right now, but still doing chemo and have to take stuff 12h apart, I can't quite get it all to work out because I need much more sleep because of the medication. Like, 12h should be enough, but it's either barely drag myself out of bed OR awake but not awake enough to move until I'm hungry. -
I missed this news until an ig post this morning and came here looking for our community. I had literally just checked her ig this morning - before her husband posted - to see if there were any updates :( I will miss her. (And autocorrect wanted to make that “kiss her”)

To answer the question - whatever happened to... I keep INTENDING to spend more time here - still my fav online community EVER. In the last couple years I switched jobs (sanity) and that left me time to pursue some creative passions - So I've been spending a lot of free time in Acting classes, submitting for self-tape auditions, and trying to add footage to a demo reel so I can try and get an agent. So far it's a few student films and independents - right where I should be as an actor starting out. Pandemic shutdown has meant little-to-no auditions or filming, so I keep training... And THEN I went back to writing, which is what I am sat-down to do today so I should not let y'all distract me ... But I ❤️ y'all and love being summoned from the ether-ethernet.
