The original was a one level at a time side scrolling platform game, but then I believe starting with Symphony of the Night it became like Metroid?

I've always pondered this. It's like Castrevania ripped roff rother games

The second castlevania was the first in the “metroidvania” style. Crude, but I’d still count it as the first.

I wouldn't call Castlevania II at all in the metroidvania style. It's an open world, but outerworld, and you go into different dungeons. More similar to Zelda II in my opinion (minus Zelda II's overworld map screen you traverse, of course).

As for the OP, they just wanted to try something different, I guess. But even if you consider them stealing that idea from Metroid, how many platformers stole their ideas from Super Mario Bros, you know?

I haven’t played much of Zelda 2. Do you not pretty much advance linearly in it?
