Ultima Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 The original was a one level at a time side scrolling platform game, but then I believe starting with Symphony of the Night it became like Metroid? I've always pondered this. It's like Castrevania ripped roff rother games

Mohri Posted April 28, 2020 Posted April 28, 2020 The second castlevania was the first in the “metroidvania” style. Crude, but I’d still count it as the first.

More similar to Zelda II in my opinion (minus Zelda II's overworld map screen you traverse, of course). As for the OP, they just wanted to try something different, I guess. But even if you consider them stealing that idea from Metroid, how many platformers stole their ideas from Super Mario Bros, you know? Edited April 28, 2020 by Doom Metal Alchemist

Expand If memory serves, you don't have to. You get an open world to explore, and I'm pretty sure you can go into dungeons out of order to an extent.
