Uzumaki - Episode 2 Discussion
Sketch replied to [classic swim]'s topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Honestly if that does bomb they kind of have every reason to not only fire DeMarco but also to close down that anime and action animation long-form division entirely because who else are they gonna get to run it and why even have it? They can keep co-funding anime without it, the first Batman Ninja had nothing to do with DeMarco or that division of the WB Animation, the 2nd one and Suicide Squad Isekai were gonna happen without that division as well. I suppose they could wait to see how Rooster Fighter and Lazarus pan out and Ninja Kamui was a successful enough project but between underwhelming critics and not making any real money, the majority of DeMarco's co-pros are a bad enough track record already so failing with Lord of the Rings could easily be the last straw. Unfortunately for him, even if its a great movie, it will not likely have a great box office. Potentially enough to offset production and marketing but it would be unusual for a movie like this to do well in theaters. -

Maybe in 2021 this was still true but it sure didn’t stay that way. -
Invincible Fight Girl premieres on Toonami on November 2nd
Sketch replied to Sketch's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Like I said the only somewhat surprising thing is Toonami didn’t just get the encore. That was always in question. -
Sounds like it's well into production. About half the episodes are animated out of the 10. He's excited for Common Side Effects. Fixed is complete and Sony is trying to find a distributor. His other movie at Sony is coming along. Man... Disney turned him down for making a super hero cartoon? WE COULD HAVE HAD PEAK MARVEL! Instead he worked on Iron Man 2's action storyboards and well... can't say it saved the movie at all. He also touched on Sym-Bionic Titan. Encouraging that he thinks there's a possibility to make more but discouraging that he admits the Netflix numbers weren't good enough to get companies interested in paying for more episodes.

Uzumaki - Episode 2 Discussion

I guess it was overly ambitious to believe every episode would look as nice as the first one did. The story is still compelling though. -
Uzumaki - World Premiere - Episode 1 Discussion

That was inevitable. Frankly AS was stupid not to air the dub later in Toonami. It’s good that it’s on Max the next day but not everyone who wanted watch the dub also has Max. -

Or maybe they get it in November because this still qualifies as “after Netflix” but yeah I expect Spring.- 1 reply

Uzumaki - World Premiere - Episode 1 Discussion
Sketch replied to [classic swim]'s topic in Episode Discussion Archive
That was the only thing in the episode that was nightmare fuel for me though cutting fingerprints hurt the most to look at. Arguably the realistic bullying was the most disturbing moment overall but the eye thing was pure nightmare fuel. I hate that it’s basically the key art for the show everywhere you look. Uzumaki means spiral and Naruto was named after the spiral shaped fish cake that’s used as a garnish on ramen and other soups. So his whole name is a pun. Screeners were sent out for review before the premiere. That’s how people already saw the entire first episode. -
RATAM held on to nearly all of the viewers that were watching Rick and Morty at 11:30pm that Saturday. I know some people won't watch the dub because of the different voices (I've gotten used to them) but I still can't hardly believe the subbed airing is beating the dub airing. Though there's enough reason to believe the dub would have done better on Toonami than it is on Thursdays so that's reasonably a factor. On the other hand, this and Uzumaki might prove that subtitled anime can work on Toonami.

November 16th on the other hand... "That's doable" They could wait till January but if they have the opportunity to start it in late November or even the first week of December, they'll likely do that. The simulcast is being shared between Hulu and Crunchyroll so it's exclusive to neither and the first 3 dubbed episodes are coming to theaters in early November. Regardless of when it happens, it seems inevitable that Toonami will air Daima. But if they're holding out for a November 16th premiere then we're in for up to 3 weeks of marathons or other forms of stalling.

Live Action One Piece, from sheer confusion to Season 2 renewal.
Sketch replied to Jman's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Crocodile is a bit of a let down. Nothing against the guy, I enjoy a lot of his performances and I do want to see his Crocodile but I think they should have gone with someone less recognizable for such an important role. -
I didn’t even consider the possibility of them moving Kai ahead of One Piece but if they have nothing else then I wouldn’t put it past them. 🤢 Guy, with regard to One Piece doubling up usually leading to weeks off the schedule. Even if it takes as long as once a week uninterrupted, double stripping One Piece and taking off a few weeks still does wonders for the sense of pacing. The same way most people prefer to watch a few episodes of One Piece in a marathon once a week rather than one daily. But ultimately I understand you want people to escape the Genjutsu and realize Toonami is doing nothing.
-
You got 3 weeks, would you rather have double One Piece or a rerun of FLCL Grunge? 🤣 For a moment there I was hopeful double One Piece would shift to 1:30-2:30 when Uzumaki came in but of course not. We can’t have 5 premieres even for 4 weeks. 🤨 Strange that they didn’t bother with a 09/28 schedule post but I can confirm the screener of Uzumaki ep 1 is 24~ mins. The question is if ep 3 is also 30+ mins or if oddly only eps 2 and 4 are longer than standard. It’s good at least two episodes are longer and won’t be crunched for time but for consistency sake I wish they were all 30+ mins. Now they need 2.5+ hours for the marathon. Unless Daima is coming on 11/02 I’m leaning toward a marathon that night. Either a needless RATAM marathon or an MHA catch-up if they’re ready to start season 7 in November. They have the free space of IFG to use whenever but I remain hopeful that there will be two other block premieres in November besides IFG.

If it's dubbed in-house at Crunchyroll that would be a somewhat interesting development given Sabat's own Okatron5000 studio has been dubbing Dragon Ball anime since Kai. But it's not at all unheard of for Crunchyroll's own studio to dub a Toei show / film since they've been doing that for One Piece for years now.

The absolute state of cable television ratings... Two American Dads and two Rick & Morty episodes were in the top 20 with the 11pm Rick and Morty at #5 for 18-49 with such low numbers as 0.144 18-49 and 246,000 viewers and that was a good 30,000 higher than anything else on Adult Swim that week. Given that, the retention from R&M at 11:30 to RATAM isn't very good and Demon Slayer cooked it, had DS been at midnight and something worthwhile was at 12:30 they might have managed 200k from 10pm till 1am, as it stands they still almost did that despite the drop at midnight. At least that week it could be argued that Adult Swim's best performing night was Saturday and that just feels bizarre. As long as the 11pm hour Rick and Morty episodes keep doing that well, there's gonna be no incentive to shift Toonami earlier. The Rick subs aren't doing Toonami any favors currently but given all those airings of RickAniMorty charted in the top 200, its safe to say the network will be satisfied with the performance overall. Ninja Kamui finishing out it's rerun with an episode that charts in the top 200 ain't too shabby at all. It managed to beat DBZ Kai given Kai is nowhere on this chart. Billy and Mandy squeek into the top 200 again but no sign of anything else on Checkered Past and nothing on Toonami Rewind.
-
What they should do is have Daima and IFG in the 7pm hour after Rewind, directly after Kai. That would mean Toonami is lead off by two encores though which could leave only One Piece for a premiere… yikes. I don’t think getting Daima completely eliminates the possibility of another acquisition before next year but if Daima doesn’t even premiere on Saturday Toonami then it would screw over anything other than an already established show like MHA or Demon Slayer. I would not want them to do that to a franchise that is new to the block. Having it stuck behind potentially two reruns reeks. At least wait till IFG is over early next year.

None of ya'll are watching this gem? Or at least saying anything about it? That's a shame. I went in not expecting much but gave it a shot and am glad I did because it can be downright hilarious. I suppose I don't have much else to say but I am genuinely enjoying it and I think it's great that Adult Swim is airing it in the US.

Double MHA won't last past November unless they're trying to start season 7 in December. It will dial back to 1 episode to drag things to January. The obvious choice to fill the rerun slot MHA will open up is Demon Slayer. That is of course unless Aniplex actually let Toonami have the Hashira Training arc already. I completely dismissed that as plausible before but we have no idea how good this relationship with Aniplex actually is so it's worth considering. So let's say Toonami actually does managed to get first dibs on the dub of Daima and it's only two or three weeks behind Japan. Here's some potential schedules. In all of these scenarios I expect Invincible Fight Girl to join the block the week after Daima has it's long episode premiere. November 2nd Daima Premiere (also works for October 26th if they choose not to do an Uzumaki marathon because of Daima) 12:00 AM - Dragon Ball Daima 01:00 AM - Mashle / One Piece / Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc (also a long episode so no 1:30 show if so) 01:30 AM - One Piece 02:00 AM - MHA (shifted up in anticipation of S7 in January) 02:30 AM - Dragon Ball Z Kai 03:00 AM - Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Arc October 26th Daima Premiere followed by Uzumaki marathon because they can't help themselves 12:00 AM - Dragon Ball Daima 01:00 AM - Uzumaki Dub Marathon 03:00 AM - Dragon Ball Z Kai (to keep pace with Rewind) And if Daima needs 3-4 weeks AND MHA has been secured then we could see this on November 2nd or 9th following an MHA marathon the week prior 12:00 AM - Dragon Ball Daima (IFG starts the next Saturday at 12:30 between DBD and MHA) 01:00 AM - MHA Season 7 01:30 AM - One Piece 02:00 AM - Dragon Ball Z Kai 02:30 AM - Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Arc A much better scenario would be if Toonami got 11:30 back with Daima but given they don't even have a premiere for 2am there's no sense in expanding unless Toei demands the slightly earlier time slot. Hey if they'll throw in some extra One Piece for the trouble then Toonami wouldn't struggle to fill another premiere slot. What I'd most like to see in the scenario Toonami got the Daima dub premiere? 11:30 PM - Dragon Ball Daima 12:00 AM - Invincible Fight Girl 12:30 AM - My Hero Academia Season 7 / Demon Slayer Hashira 1:00 AM - Something from Sentai / Mashle 1:30 AM - One Piece 2:00 AM - One Piece 2:30 AM - IGPX Season 2
