I don't think so. I think it was a combination of incompetence and the inability to fix the mess that was made of the Lithium/Nodebb switch.
I would speculate that it came down to "hey so we can fix this mess with some time and money ... or we can just shut it down and move on".
And previously, when Lazzo would float changing things boardwise, there was a burgeoning community to voice dissent and also a healthy legion of admins between him and us to explain the whys and wherefors sufficiently to keep him at bay I think.
But this time around, the boards were probably back on the table, and there were zero admins to advocate for it, and a vastly dwindled audience (both gradually over time and then yet another massive drop for the nodebb debacle).
So - it was probably just one of those "okay so we can shuffle person x and funds for this and do this and fix the boards" or "we can shut it down and move on", there were just no one around to make a compelling argument to the contrary, the user base was erratic, annoyed, up in arms, etc. All the admins that ever cared about the place were gone to other departments.
so I think it was much more just a "k hm so money and people to the boards, or shut boards down?" and all signals just pointed to shutting it down. so they did.
