Doomerism: an apparently real social phenomenon now
Icarus27k replied to Icarus27k's topic in Current Events
In 2014, before the Paris Climate Agreement was signed, it was commonly thought the long-term mean of global temperature would rise 4°C above preindustrial level by 2100. In 2021, when the following New York Times article was written just before the COP26 meeting in Glasgow, the assumption was 3°C by 2100. Today, it's 2.6°C by 2100. I hope this framing of progress is helpful. Yes, There Has Been Progress on Climate. No, It’s Not Nearly Enough. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/10/25/climate/world-climate-pledges-cop26.html?smid=nytcore-android-share -
Donald Trump calls off press conference where he said he would share report on Georgia election fraud claims The former president said his lawyers would instead put “Irrefutable & Overwhelming evidence” in their legal filings over his latest indictment. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/08/17/donald-trump-calls-off-press-conference-where-he-said-he-would-share-report-on-georgia-election-fraud-claims-00111785 If he had blockbuster, exonerating information that proved allegations against him are false, wouldn't it make sense for him to have produced that in the two years of investigation BEFORE he was indicted?

2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences

Like, I don't think Biden was expecting to be the U.S. president on whose watch U.S. GDP growth surpassed China's, but there it is. -

On the economy, there is a ton of good news that can be cited. Here is just one random one. Seems like a big deal U.S. is now outpacing China in GDP growth. Anyone who has casually been paying attention to geopolitics for the past 25 years would be stunned. -

I suspect if the GOP nominates someone other than Trump, Trump voters will not vote. -

In other words, majorities of Americans (54% and 54%) have confidence in Biden's ability to manage the WH and achieve his policy goals. I dare say if Biden were to get 54% of votes, he would be reelected. -
And that's how Shafer's journey to a RICO felony began. Hard to feel sorry for the guy. Yeah, he's probably acting out of fear, but at some point I would have stood up for myself.

People realizing the Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle is a very realistic, human character despite all the sci fi that goes on around him. That's what I've known about him since his first appearance in the 00s.

It's common knowledge that Republicans fear Donald Trump. They don't want him to ruin their careers by saying mean things or whatever. This never made sense because it was obvious Trump would be in prison in a few years. You're really going to be scared of a guy whose only concern will eventually be what's for lunch in prison each day? Cowards who completely lack foresight. Even if Trump cost you a job, you could eventually get it back when everyone forgot about Trump.

The racketeering law that all 19 defendants are charged with has a mandatory minimum that requires prison.

Ten indictments. Apparently of ten different people.

Can't wait for the Trump and Gang indictment crowd to mix with the Beyonce concert crowd.

A Republican would probably still have won the 2016 election, served somewhat competently and gotten reelected in 2020. 2024 probably would be a swing back to a new Democratic president.

Donald Trump could of stayed a C-list, rich guy celebrity who would occasionally make cameos in movies and appear in commercials whenever he needed extra money. But no....

In order to get out on bail in Georgia, a defendant has to prove they pose "no risk" of intimidating witnesses or obstructing justice.
