    Yeah, at least they finally did and just retcon away all the filler by picking up where the diverged. All I can think of is that at the time a filler arc could have ended the season, but the real issue was even after a long filler arc there would still be no more manga to adapt and it would take a massive break for enough manga to resume and long breaks between seasons weren't as common yet back then. So they probably would have had to do a Naruto and make at least a year+ long filler arc. Though, like you said, this show would have been well suited for some noncommittal filler arcs. Nowadays they would have just ended the season and waited.

    Yeah, it was very strange it took them so long to come back to it with a rebooted second season that picked up from the canon material.
