    Yeah, I believe that second battle with Amaimon was the end of the last arc that had finished in the manga at the time.

    Exactly. Apparently there were a couple of things in the last battle introduced to kick off the anime only second half (the next arc was still ongoing at the time when the anime got here), like Rin's sword getting damaged. They are all ignored and we jump back to the break point for Season 2. Including more varied reactions from Rin's teammates.

    Yes, the rest of the season (episodes 17-25) is all not canon. This is the last ep that had any content from the manga. From what I understand, Season 2 picks up from where we left off right after this battle with Amaimon and ignores the rest of this (and retcons one or two things like the sword not being broken) to get back to manga canon. Mixed Canon Episodes: 1-3, 16-17 Manga Canon Episodes: 4-5, 7-10, 12-15 Filler Episodes: 6, 11, 18-25

    During that battle. For example, Rin never cuts that gate with his sword so it's not broken. From what I understand, this episode is part canon, mostly filler and this isn't how we get Rin's classmate's real reactions to his reveal.
