  1. Now that I think about it, due to how incredibly early they started the adaptation it's also true they ran out of manga so early that when you think about it it's possible they also thought that filler would be difficult since they hadn't even reached the backstories for the other team members yet so it's not like they could easily do filler stories touching on the other characters yet either, since we're still getting to know them.
  2. Yeah, probably a combination of both. I agree filler arcs would have made sense to me too, except they started the adaptation so early they caught up so fast (only 16 episodes into the show). Others have mentioned this was probably because the manga had gotten really big quickly and back then anime was often seen as advertisement for the manga. The big reason I'd guess was that (similar to original FMA) at the time we didn't really see ongoing shows take multi-year breaks for the manga to get ahead again between seasons like we do now (hence Naruto's infamous very long filler arcs for example) and there was supposedly only enough material for about another half season left that supposedly wouldn't have ended in a good place. So I think you're right that they probably assumed that they wouldn't make another season since they'd probably have to wait a few years for enough manga, and back then waits of a few years between seasons weren't really a thing.
  3. Since we're at the spot where the divergence begins and there are already a few things in this ep (but especially starting the next) we'll have to remember don't happen when S2 starts this seems to be a good visual aid: https://imgur.com/a/ao-no-exorcist-s2-retcon-Y7Kfo
  4. We probably should have seen this before Law took his ass out. Wasted.
  5. Yeah, at least they finally did and just retcon away all the filler by picking up where the diverged. All I can think of is that at the time a filler arc could have ended the season, but the real issue was even after a long filler arc there would still be no more manga to adapt and it would take a massive break for enough manga to resume and long breaks between seasons weren't as common yet back then. So they probably would have had to do a Naruto and make at least a year+ long filler arc. Though, like you said, this show would have been well suited for some noncommittal filler arcs. Nowadays they would have just ended the season and waited.
