Hot water seems to damage/shrink clothes, yet cold water doesn't seem to get the smell out.

I have always pondered this question.

Cold water can get the smell out.  Sometimes it's the method that makes the difference.  Don't cram the washer.  Pile the clothes in at 2/3 of the barrel or less.  That lets the water circulate more thoroughly and get the malodorous substances out of the fabric.  Also, try using less detergent.  Detergent is mostly a surfactant. it makes the water softer so it flows better between the clothing fibers.  When you use too much, it leaves a sticky film on the cloth.
