I love when there’s an excuse to be a lazy ass..... I got three days off.... And then I must go back to hell....

oh plus side though I’m making masks.... I’ve got hello Kitty ones, Carebear ones, Superman ones, I even have this one pattern that’s white and it’s got a collage of little cats on it and they have bowties on

The home made masks won't really do anything to keep people from getting sick. My cousins friend tried to prove me wrong on this by sending me a link to a lady that makes homemade masks, and her husband is a doctor "so she knows what she's talking about".  Pretty much it was a cut up Hepa filter in between some cloth. I've even seen people making 3m masks out of paintball masks. Except in both cases there were huge gaps at the bottom or around the nose for air to come in. The problem being is that if it isn't air tight then air isn't passing through the filter at all. Also the problem with hepa filters is that they're multi stage filtration. The video's pretty much show just taking one layer out for a mask. On top of which if a mask were air tight and all you had to breath through is a mask with a hepa on it, you'll die. Reason one is that our lungs aren't strong enough to pull enough air through a hepa. Reason 2 is we're not mechanical and are giant water bags that are always breathing out water. Given that you have the lungs of a god and could breath enough though a hepa. The hepa is going to capture the small water drops that come out as you breath. Similar to how a scarf will get moist if you have it over your mouth in the winter. Except since it's air tight it's going to vacuum lock to your face and suffocate you. If it isn't air tight then it means that the hepa filter isn't going to work because its easier for air to be drawn into the mask through the gaps than it would be to pull air in through a multi stage filter.

sorry I really don’t have the attention span to read all of that... I’m going through some shit... That being said I know the masks don’t do anything....But the company I work for isnt doing anything for us... But we still have to follow CDC recommendations and protocol....So if the CDC says you gotta wear masks.... We Gotta wear masks.... Be honest as a healthcare professional we should’ve already been wearing them....

You're right about a good seal being important, but even t-shirt jersey cotton is better than nothing. Even if you're only stopping the larger droplets. If you reduce your viral load at all, you have a better chance of not becoming infected. So the worst masks could save lives, but they're nowhere near being good enough for ppl in high risk situations like healthcare workers

At best it keeps you from touching your mouth with your hands, as you're far more likely to get sick from touching something then touching your mouth or eyes then you are from breathing the air.

Sucks, my brothers gf is a nurse and my dads gf's son and daughter are nurses so I gave them my spare reusable 3m masks to use that have the plug in filters. I have eosinophilic asthma, so I've always kept some 3m masks for when I do drywall, wood cutting, or cleaning. I'm just going without myself. My brother advised against that since I just had a lung biopsy, but I don't really come into contact with other people that often, and I just keep in mind not to touch my face when out. I find it comical when I'll see people walking around in gloves, full face masks, eye protection in the store. Then you'll see normal workers who have to put up with this shit daily that aren't wearing anything.

The lower end reusable that take filters should be in the $20 range, given before everything went to shit. The n95 single use masks would have been like $1.40 each.  I can understand a little bit of price gouging, supply and demand etc. Though that level of greed brings to mind the saying that there's a special place in hell for people like that. Also reminds me of how some medications can be $6k a dose or how hospitals can charge $180 for a bag of sterile water.

The article is a little misleading when showing the old photos. They weren't wearing those masks to protect from viruses. They were wearing them to protect from smog. Pittsburgh smog used to be so bad that it would kill people in their sleep if the wind blew wrong. Just walking through the city would leave ash and dirt on you, so yeah breathing that shit into your lungs wasn't good.
The point of wearing a cloth mask for viruses is if you're already sick. It helps stop you from hacking water drops into the air. A normal cough can have water droplets hit up to 8ft away. Having a mask on contains that area to less than 12 inches.  The biggest help that wearing a mask when not sick is more that it keeps you from touching your mouth. It can help with lessening the chance of inhaling water drops, in the similar way that it's been proven that breathing through your nose lessens the chance of getting sick as opposed to breathing through your mouth. Though you do have to have a very good seal for the air to actually pass through the mask to act as a filter. I see far too many people making these masks that they wear loose, or have huge gaps in them.  Hell in WWI they would piss on a cloth and put over their face to filter out mustard gas. The point of the piss was that wet cloth makes a tight seal. The downside is they were breathing through piss soaked cloth. Also very difficult to breath through if you've ever placed a wet rag on your face in the tub may know.

Yeah but why use them. It would be like me talking about people not being able to find food at the super market; then have a photo of Jews at Auschwitz. Aside from being insensitive it's just bad journalistic practices.  It's making the claim that masks work and showing old pictures of people in cities wearing masks to help support the point that "it's not just some new age future science, it's been around forever, see it works". I declare misleading context, I will be sure to send Wired a telegram voicing my displeasure with their integrity.

Can you even prove to me that photo is what you say it is?
