Got any really crappy speakers?

Had a pair of old Panasonic bookshelf speakers with torn baffles & a pair of Infinitys.  I had to move & put the Infinitys in a box marked "Books".  I had the original Panasonic box.

Idiot movers stole the Panasonics, I was holding on to them intending to replace the speaker cones.  Jerks - serves them right to steal garbage.

you can make a pair of shitty $30 speakers sound great if you build them into an appropriate cabinet. go buy some 4-1/4" car door speakers and cut them into an old 30-caliber ammo can. bass falls from the sky and fills up your boots.

That could include a bass reflex tube.  Now, you're talking.

You just did better than I did.  What did you use as a hole saw blade?  It had to be tough to get such a clean cut through the metal.

i just drilled a 1/2" pilot hole and used a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade. took a little while, but it turned out pretty good.

Three quarter inch plywood, speaker hole cut with jigsaw, bass reflex cut with hole saw.

Did Michael J Fox cut that hole for you?

At least that's what it looks like.  I can't afford his time.  I don't have enough practice in using the saw.  The saw is a very recent acquisition.  Fortunately, cover grids are available on eBay.  That would give the box a more professional look.  Also when I acquired the box, it was held together with finishing nails.  I reinforced all the joints with #12 x 1.5 inch wood screws.  That stops the rattling during drum beats.  To avoid splitting the boards, I predrilled the holes for the screws.

you should be mounting the speakers on the outside of the box, not the inside. also, there's a lot of math behind porting: diameter of hole and length of port tube vs volume of cabinet and air displacement of speakers. if you don't do it right, it can actually make the cabinets sound worse.

I'd appreciate the help, if you know the math.  The box interior is 10" front to back, 9.5" top to bottom and 16" side to side.  Thanks.
