Ruining the Sasuke and Itachi story (even though it wasn't the best it got the job done), retconning multiple plotlines and character motivations, ruining Itachi's character, was to get Sasuke to go after the Leaf Village?! REALLY?! God damn it Kishimoto. There were plenty of other ways you could do that. Sasuke was already apathetic to them. Not too hard to steer him towards hatred and declare war on them.
