I have yet to see that, personally. But that's one of the reasons why Moose rags on it. You'd think he would want other series to follow One Piece's example, since he lauds it so much. Tch. I mean, online, I see a lot of One Piece/Fairy Tail mash-ups, so clearly there's some overlap with the fan bases...
-
Pffft. I've already taken everything you said on this series with a grain of salt. You said that Fairy Tail never loses which was total bullshit. I kept a whole log of losses of Fairy Tail characters, and Fairy Tail itself losing, and there were many. Plus a good deal of what else you said was wrong, like there being no inter-connectivity between arcs, no overarching plotline, no continuous storylines... So yeah, you're full of shit, as usual, Moose.

Figures I waited around so long for Fairy Tail to air on ASA and then Toonami, by the time I finally start watching it, it's about to end in the manga. Ah well, at least I know it will have a definite ending!

I kept telling myself I was going to catch up on this show and listen in order, but I would've never gotten back into it if I kept waiting for that, so I'm jumping into the current episode now, and I'll catch up on the old ones as I can. Last episode I listened to before all the bullshit happened was episode 107. Aaahhh, I feel whole again! Oh yeah. I realize few, if any of the hosts are on this board, regardless of what the user list might say, but I don't know where else to post this, and I had been posting it with the rest of this community all this time, Youtube comments are the wrong format for my commentary, and their show did originate in this community after all! Anyway, without further ado... Toonami Show Rundown 120 - What A Real Cartoonist Looks Like - 2/11/17 Intro - Dimension W sure did suck. Well this has gone on quite a tangent. Adam Sandler in what movies? FUCK IT WE'LL DO IT LIVE! You've gone down a paradoxical rabbit hole. Goku's property taxes ROFL. Hahahahaha jeez. So you still won't just give your personal favorites, eh? Dragonball Super - Vegeta was funny here. Yeah Piccolo is non-confrontational. Dancing Vegeta. "Oh yes let's go say hello to Yamcha." :D :D Yeah it seems like Beerus was about lose it several times. BROTHER! Well it's obvious the inspiration for Hercule haha. Fast-forwarding?! You betray your duty to the show! Kid Vegeta had bangs in the Bardock movie. And Nappa had hair. Which conflicts with the whole Sayian's hair never changes thing. They are unnecessary retcons. Kind of annoying but I'm not super upset about it. Self-contained and faster-paced... hmm... a different kind of Dragonball. You know, the very first Saga was kind of like that... SUPER attachment hohoho. DBZ Kai - Super big time call back! South Kai always sounded like that I thought. I miss the Other World Tournament though. So South Kai is canon?! Aww, the others aren't. Pikkon was cool, though. I liked her with pigtails too. Videl was cute that way. She still looks good though yeah. What is what that Super hair? She had to have spikey hair to join the Z Fighters! I always loved Videl. Well using chi powers was explained a loooooooong time ago. Oh god Roshi. Wait that's right he can't fly can he? It becomes second nature after a while. Wow I really don't know when Goku learned to fly. Holy shit. There's tons of flying cars in the cities. You guys must not have paid attention. Old tech still exists just like in our world. Also Toriyama probably just likes drawing stuff. Hence Krillin fighting Cell on a WWII plane or the 57 Chevy we see in town when people are running from Cell. JoJo - Having to go in for your job has count as a date rofl. Hahaha visual novel date. Pornhub free premium lmao. You guys are losing focus here. "This is madness why are you making me do this?" "How can I cheat?" Hamon Janitor HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I'm pretty sure it was specifically designed for its purpose. Brisk, insane, funny training is always good. Barely animated? Narrator is great. If the JoJo manga went monthly then it's REALLY never gonna end. Well Oda is ordered to take the fourth week of the month off. Sick burn indeed. Togashi's scribbles hahahaha. No bad episodes of JoJo. Gundam Unicorn - Full Frontal is a terrible name. So is Banana Jar. How dare you read it off wikipedia! Philosophy bullshit and pretentious WAR IS BAD preaching is Gundam in a nutshell most of the time. It's annoying in this show for sure. So this show is confusing for other people too. Good to hear. Yeah ridiculously dense and nothing is explained. Who is Angelo? Those masks are so stupid. Full Frontal doesn't like a character from this show. Looks like a Sailor Moon character. Char is dead. DEAD! The action would be better if we knew what the hell was going on and what suits belonged to what factions. Hard to follow for sure. Oh it doesn't help this make more sense. Plus don't watch that. Amuro is annoying. The show makes more sense when the narrator actually tells what the hell is going on in the recaps, names characters and factions. Too early to tell with Banagher maybe? Mika would one-shot Bannister. Hiatus - Yup, we had a whole episode devoted to hunting for a vintage game console. I'm good with Pat the NES Punk's Flea Market Madness. Isshin is a good dad. Haha those are comic relief beatings! Togusa is a good dad... Hiatus is always uneventful. Yes let's explore this incredibly boring and uninteresting world. Gon is a quasi-sociopath. Naruto - I don't like leeches. The fuck man. They're awful. AND THEY SUCK YOUR BLOOD! Naruto is an idiot. And so are Sai and Yamato apparently. Haha Yamato just doesn't care. LOL accidentally watched five minutes of the last episode. Benten! The filler goons look terrible. Horrible designs. I can't take the bubbles seriously. One Piece - Okay that lag wasn't on my end, haha. Poor Laboon. Yes even the damn dog had a tragic backstory. I didn't realize his first name was Calico haha. Ahhhh before the time of Gold Roger! You're right! Yeah he still had the scar before he became a skeleton. When Robin is trying to laugh in the boat. T__T Wow padding old tragic backstories with more tragedy? rofl Zoro never brought up his backstory to the crew, at least not onscreen. We saw that when he was sleeping one episode. Maybe he did say why the sword was special before. Can't remember. Ghost in the Shell - No graphic for GitS. The stripper costume never did make sense. Yeah this episode is pretty memorable. Robot tank probably not pure intentions there. Block Wrap-up - Budokai 3 was really good. I beat all three got everything in them. The old games are fun. Ultimate Battle 22. Played some of the Super Famicom ones on an emulator. Good times. Poor Tien haha. Never played the Xenoverse games. Sound cool though. Naruto game full of spoilers. Not that we care at this point. WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT NOISE?! That was bad advice. You could throw it away when the dog is asleep. I took away this pool hackysack ball thing from my cat because was going all feral with it. Though he still does that with the furry mice toys from time to time, now that I think about it.

Did anyone else ever see Luke Skywalker as gay?
ben0119 replied to ben0119's topic in Movies & Television
The "baggage" doesn't have to be LGBT-related. Jman just wants a hispanic heroic character representing him, but Mochi wants to hog all the representation, even though there's way more LGBT characters than non-stereotypical heroic hispanic characters. It makes it especially odd given the amount of hispanics in the general population, whereas gays make up 2-4%, at best. -

Yeah, I pretty much agree with both of your posts, Luuv. Disney is very gay-friendly. They have those Gay Days at Disneyland or whatever. Openly supportive. For whatever it's worth there are gay characters in the new Star Wars books and comics. Not sure if/when we'll see any onscreen, though. I agree Luke was probably conceived of as straight, and I agree with the reasons you gave for him being swept up in everything, having greater concerns, etc. I see it just as likely that he chose not to have any romantic involvement, and focused on other things, like training the next generation of Jedi. I mean, it kind of makes sense that he doesn't have any kids. Han and Leia's kid is named after Ben Kenobi, who was much more special to Luke than either of them. Leia probably did that because Luke had no child of his own to name after Obi-wan. It makes sense. -

Julio Lopez from M.A.S.K. wasn't a stereotype. He was a doctor. Also apparently Poe Dameron is hispanic, which wasn't obvious to me when I watched the movie. I've heard it said that Sabine his hispanic, but her VA and that of her family are all played by Indian-Americans. Sooo, I don't know. They are some kind of tan people, at the very least. Not sure on Ezra's ethnicity, but I'd say Persian or something since his character was basically Space Aladdin when he was first introduced. Not sure about Kanan. I've heard people say none of the main characters are white, which was a stretch to me because no one seemed especially dark to me (I certainly didn't take Sabine as hispanic until it was brought up), so I don't know. -

That hispanic girl from Supergirl is gay. Her and her girlfriend's characters and their romance are well done, by the way. -
Out of the shonen on Toonami that nobody watches...

What this has all taught us? Star Wars is far more interesting than Hunter x Hunter. No one can even be bothered to argue about how shitty Hiatus is anymore because it's so boring! -

I like how you only quoted and responded to the part where I made the Rey Skywalker argument, and ignored the much heavier evidence I brought to Rey being an abandoned orphan. Yes Kylo Ren is Han and Leia's kid, but he's evil, and I don't see much chance of him being redeemed. So that means there's no new young Skywalker protagonist and no way to carry on the next generation. George Lucas's plans for the sequels were going to tell the story of Darth Vader's grandchildren. He actually told people that if they don't like The Force Awakens, don't blame him, because it appeared to him that Lucasfilm under Disney isn't going to have Star Wars be about that anymore. Yet, the Expanded Universe told a story about that next generation, and we still have Kylo Ren confirmed, though he's evil. Lucasfilm under Disney has stated that the Saga films (the episodes) are about the Skywalkers. That's what they always were, what they always will be. The whole point of Rogue One and future anthology films was to show us that the entire galaxy doesn't revolve around the Skywalkers. So if you want stories about other people unrelated to the Skywalkers, that's where you will get your fix... and the new comics and books, I guess. I have a hard time believing that thing about Finn. Especially after the information I've gleaned from watching various Star Wars lore videos and reading stuff online. Apparently, it's explained in some of the new books/comics that the children The First Order abducted were kids of people who worked for the Empire, pretty high quality, people, if I recall. So they were looking for "good Imperial stock", for lack of a better term. Given that, it's highly unlikely Finn is related to anyone from the original trilogy, at least not someone with any significant role. People also kind of want to make everyone related to everyone because that's what Star Wars has done this whole time. In A New Hope we met Luke and learned he was the son of a powerful Jedi. Anakin was taught by Obi-wan, betrayed by Vader. So already we have a lineage there before it was even decided that Vader was actually Luke's son. Then we learn he's Vader's kid, and so is Leia and they're siblings, and so on. Then in the Prequels we watched the story of the Obi-wan in his youth, and Luke and Leia's parents. A major part of Anakin turning to the Dark Side was the fate of his mother, wife, and children. So, Star Wars, the episodes, anyway, has always been a story of family, mainly the Skywalkers, through the generations. Though I agree that the fan speculation of making everyone absolutely related to everyone is pretty silly. Hmm, her being Han and Leia's kid is something I hadn't thought about too much. That could be it. What is there to read into, though? The way Han and Leia seem "nice" to her? And why dump her on the planet? Once again, if you take the scenes in the movie for what they are and don't overthink them, it makes it obvious that Rey always lived there, and her parents did too, at least long enough to have her and raise her to the age they left her there. Also, they wouldn't be twins because Kylo Ren is supposed to be in his late 20s or early 30s or something. He turned on Luke and the New Jedi Order when he was 23, I believe. Thing is, though, if they say Rey is related to no one, which would be all the more impressive, since again, Luke's dad was a Jedi, as humble as his beginnings might have been, it would make it so she really did come from nowhere and may probably ultimately be better for the story, it might piss off a good deal of people invested with Rey being related to someone, most likely Luke. Rian Johnson has also said he is going with his own vision and isn't doing stuff just to suit fans. So that gives me hope he won't make stuff happen in the movie just to please people with their theories. Still, we'll have to see. Personally, right now, I'm a lot more interested in what the books have hinted at as far as Snoke's origin, which sounds creepy as hell. And stop fucking calling her Rei. Edit - Also, Poe can't be related to anyone from the Original Trilogy, because we already know his parents from the new comics and books and they're new characters. Not sure why people consider him one of the "main three", though. He was a cool character but wasn't in the movie nearly enough. I hope he's featured more in The Last Jedi. -

So something I've noticed... One Piece has a harem element. Lol
ben0119 replied to moose's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Mark your spoilers, boy. I'm pretty sure something is heavily implied with Zoro and Kuina/Tashigi, and Usopp with Kaya. The Veggie Pirates even alluded to it, saying something like Usopp is really lucky and should count his blessings or some shit. In was in one of those things we get every now and then where we go around the world and see what everyone is up to and/or their reaction to the Straw Hats' latest exploits. You're right that Robin hasn't been put in any such situation. I look at Luffy more as a 'big kid' than 'asexual'. I'm pretty sure that's the intent there. I remember early on he would drink milk instead of beer. That disappeared without explanation later on, though. I would hope no one is thinking about putting Franky or Brook with anyone... because eww. Actually, I bet someone is putting Franky with the 2 long nose girls he saved from alcoholism, CM Punk-style. FUCK. What possessed you to bring up Chopper, I have no fucking clue. As for Sanji, it's not just sex jokes... besides the perviness there's romance implied there, too, saying he wants to marry women and deciding things are proof that women love him. Doesn't make much sense if you want the series to not have romance, to throw inthese jokes (which have been thoroughly run into the ground at this point), hyper-sexualized characters, and then cringe-inducing lines like "I'M-INTERESTED-IN-ADVENTURE-NOT-RO-MANCE!" : -

ben0119 replied to moose's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Why do you keep saying "confusing?" The confusing thing is what's going through Oda's heads, but as for the series itself, it's just hypocritical and annoying. And if there won't be actual romance, with all these hyper-sexualized characters running around, someone should at least be interested in sex! Humans reproducing! HOW GENERIC! Though I will say one thing. For years Kubo said he didn't believe in doing romance, because he believed there better and more interesting things he could do with his characters. Yet he would continue to throw hints in various directions, tease, and troll. Then at the end he timeskips over all the romance and throws characters together that never so much as held hands together before that. It felt... awkward, in some ways. I mean, you can't have that rule and then go against it at the last moment. Well, I guess he did technically not show any romance... but that makes timeskipping over all that all the more annoying. More annoying still is how he seems to have gone back on Rukia x Ichigo at the last minute and throw subtle hints and the new pairings he was planning. I'd personally rather had the series end with nobody together. Maybe we wouldn't be able to see where everyone was ten years later, but I don't think that's such a tragedy. It would have been principled, at least. And felt more natural, with how loveless the whole rest of the manga had been... besides the tragic romances that ended with one or both partners dying, of course. Actually, with no current timeline romances explicitly developed and all past ones, while done well, ended in tragedy, made you realize what Kubo thought of including it... then he does that ending anyway. I mean, I can see setting up a "next generation" sequel, but it's pretty obvious Kubo wasn't going to make a sequel... that would be left up to the fan's imaginations. SO! Why not leave the pairings or lack thereof up to the fans' imaginations?! Okay... got on a bit of a rant there... -

It's Rogue One, and you better see it before it's completely out of theaters! Star Wars is made for theaters, and this movie is awesome! Trust me, Kevin Smith himself said it was "Empire good!" Gotta be honest I never heard anybody talk shit about Return of the Jedi until the internet, and it seems like only in the past few years, too. I don't get it. -

ben0119 replied to Zenigundam's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Yeah it's too late now once I saw it. x_x Too tired but will respond when I get the chance. No it doesn't. And fuck Eva. Her being Luke's daughter would kinda make sense, though. She lives on a shitty backwoods desert planet, she has a doll of a rebel pilot, has that helmet. She's good with machines, decent fighter, a decent pilot. The saber calls to her as it did Anakin and Luke. The reveal doesn't have to be a big surprise. And most casual fans aren't going to care if it was "too obvious." A lot of people walked out of the theater thinking she was Luke's daughter, so a twist to something more annoying and nonsensical probably wouldn't sit well. The Kenobi thing would be stupid as fuck. Then again, I've heard it said that her parents are in fact just 2 random deadbeats that left her on the planet. Some obvious things were pointed out that we've overlooked. When the spaceship takes off, Rey is already wearing the desert garb. It doesn't make sense for her to be wearing that clothes if someone just dropped her there. Rey says "come back." She doesn't say "take me with you!" When Rey sees Takodana she says she didn't know there was so much green in the entire galaxy. So, it sounds like she's always lived there and her parents were just awful people who took off the first chance they got and that dumped her there. Then you have Maz Kanada saying "whoever you're waiting for, they aren't coming back. But someone still could." Which implies that Luke is not among the people that left her there. So maybe there's no mindwipe or heritage to past characters or anything. I've also heard the argument that Ben Solo was given that name for Luke, since Ben was much more special to Luke than Han or Leia, and if Luke didn't have any children, he wouldn't be able to name any of them Ben... Finally we have Daisey Ridley herself saying she thought the identity of Rey's parents was obvious after seeing the movie. I mean if it were any other movie we'd probably take the information we were given at face value and understand Rey's parents abandoned her and don't matter. But since it's Star Wars... So yeah maybe we are all overthinking this and Rey really does come from nothing. Not sure how audiences would take that, though. -
So something I've noticed... One Piece has a harem element. Lol
ben0119 replied to moose's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Well, Luffy did react to the flashing at Albasta. Yeah that's true, she has done that before, especially early on with various pirate thugs. I can see that. It would also be difficult just in practicality, since if they did hook up with someone, that person would either have to wait for them to get back (if they ever do), or have that person join the crew, and they'd have to have more to contribute than just being someone's boyfriend or girlfriend. Yeah, she should have said something like that. Or like I said, just say she's not interested in that whacko. Well yes, that's true, but it's something that's kind of hard to get around. It's a pretty major and integral part of the human mind and life as a human. If this was Star Trek, One Piece characters would be some weird race on an alien planet with a totally different culture, ways of doing things, physiology, etc. It's kind of hard to do that for a whole series instead of just one episode, and the reason given is "THAT'S JUST HOW THE SHOW IS!" I mean, in other cases, we always get explanations, or things are at least addressed. Batman, for example, tries to avoid having girlfriends because he doesn't have time for it, or because of who he is, it would just put them in danger. With One Piece, you're just supposed to not think about it at all. And again, it's not like you can just put it out of your head, because it's thrown right in your face with the cartoony-but-still-sexualized characters, Sanji behaving the way he does, etc. I mean, you're right, romance can be bad or nearly non-existent in a lot of shonens, but if Oda thinks he's not good at it or simply doesn't want it as a big part in the story, he could've done something like maybe some girl fall for Zoro, and he has to leave her there, because well, he has to keep travelling on the Grand Line. Like, it's not even something that would need to happen more than once. I think if you did something like that, it would put a lot of this criticism to rest. And again, it's kind of hypocritical when you have hyper-sexualized characters running around. The shippers are annoying as fuck, though. -
One Piece Episode 380 Discussion Thread
ben0119 replied to AnimationFan14's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
I see. I need to read some chapters then to see for myself, I suppose. Also, some parts of One Piece fights have no backgrounds. >=] I read and looked through earlier chapters and I didn't see much difference, except that the art looked more sketchy. Hell, that big epic entrance into the Seireitei when Ichigo and co. first land in Soul Society isn't even in the manga. The anime did that shot on their own. Or maybe I'm just remembering things wrong. I think the fights come off pretty well. Kubo wanted readers to be more focused on the characters, and there's plenty of background and its destruction when it's called for, haha. Though with many series I find fights better in animated form. I read the chapters of Kakashi's backstory, one with the bridge battle with the Mist Ninja, and I think the first volume. Don't remember it being too sketchy. Hahahaha oh god. Well, that series does like to over-explain mundane bullshit.
