Trump’s New York hush-money case will start March 25. It’s the first of his criminal trials NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s hush-money trial will go ahead as scheduled with jury selection starting March 25, a New York judge ruled Thursday, turning aside demands for delay from the former president’s defense lawyers, who argued it would interfere with his campaign to retake the White House. https://apnews.com/article/trump-hush-money-new-york-criminal-case-fbdff18df40920b75873b3a40317f5ee Trump will be on criminal trial in about a month and a half.

I still think about the dinner rolls at a buffet restaurant in the Atlanta suburb I grew up in that doesn't exist anymore.

2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences

This above is why the special election in NY-3 turned out well for Democrats. Years ago, Democratic party activists like myself used to dread special elections, and low turnout elections in general. They were difficult and the GOP had the advantage. Now that's changed. It's years of work of organizing and creating a Democratic base that actually wants to go out in the middle of a snowstorm in February to vote. -

It's hilarious how much they can't help themselves. Media: Democrats winning elections is bad news for Democrats. -

It kind of makes you wonder if Trump knows this is going to happen, and that's why he's asserting control over the RNC now, instead of doing it earlier. *Lightbulb* -

You can see it coming: At one point, someone will ask the question: can the Republican Party replace Trump for someone else? Maybe Nikki Haley or Ron DeSantis. But the RNC will be powerless because Trump just forced the RNC chair to resign and replaced her with a member of his own family. -

There's going to be weeks of Trump on trial over Jan. 6. It's going to be the top news story for weeks. And this is going to be late summer, leading into Labor Day (probably). For all we know, once that's over, the narrative could be: How much is Trump to lose by? It's definitely not going to be good for Republicans. -

Summary: The 81-year-old guy who defeated that one guy already four years ago, who has a booming economy and a half dozen significant laws to his name (including lowering America's carbon emissions significantly and forgiving $100 billion worth of student loans). The 77-year-old who is going to be going to court dates throughout the year, has no money to campaign on, and is going to get convicted of what is basically sedition in about September. -
One hour later... The Court is setting up additional briefings instead of immediately granting cert.

Regarding the DC trial, we are currently at a moment that will tell us how the U.S. Supreme Court is feeling about Trump's claim of presidential immunity, which has to be decided before the trial can begin. Yesterday was the deadline the DC Circuit gave Trump to file appeal, which he did just before the deadline expired. Two things could happen: 1. If the U.S. Supreme Court is inclined to hear the case, they would most likely immediately grant cert to hear it. 2. If they are NOT inclined to hear it, they will likely grant a stay for a limited amount of time (say 10 days) and demand the defense and prosecution make a final case for each of their sides. This is to give the defense one last chance to convince them to take the case. So, depending on what the Supreme Court does in the next few days (immediately agrees to hear it or sets a deadline to hear one last briefing on the matter), it'll tell you how quickly this is going to play out.

Cross-posting this from the "Trump Insurrection" thread to say I'm 95% sure Trump will be convicted of these crimes if it goes to a trial, and these best estimates for trial dates would have a trial concluding before Election Day in November. Somehow I don't see America electing a just convicted felon president. -
Legal experts at JustSecurity.com have an expected timeline for when Trump's federal trial related to Jan. 6 could begin and end. This is based on Trump's filing constitutional claims on the novel idea of presidential immunity. Long story short: the experts think Trump's immunity claims will fail and the U.S. Supreme Court will reject, and Trump will stand criminal trial before election day. An expected start date of a trial range from June 1 to July 15, with expected end date ranging from Sept. 1 to Oct. 30. Earlier or later in those dates depends on whether the Supreme Court agrees to grant cert and hear oral arguments or not. https://www.justsecurity.org/91837/how-long-will-trumps-immunity-appeal-take-analyzing-the-alternative-timelines/
