2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences
Icarus27k replied to NewBluntsworth's topic in Current Events
A surprising story of the last week is how bad Sen. Tim Scott has kissed Trump's butt. Scott was once thought to be a rising star for Republicans. But then again, once upon a time, Paul Ryan, Kevin McCarthy and Ron DeSantis were thought about that way too. -

I expect DeSantis to be another Scott Walker. Remember that guy? A right-winger than Wisconsin kept electing for some reason, until finally one election, voters decided to fire him. -

Trump is going to be the GOP nominee. I had a little bit of expectation early on they would move on from him, but no. They are not done losing general elections. -

The U.S. will start to insist on a peace process if Israel continues to resist it. I wouldn't be surprised if military aid to Israel starts to be conditional based on that. All done quietly though.

At some point in 1997, we thought Russia was just a fictional place. Like Narnia or Tatooine.

It's true. Have you ever tried to explain to a non-American what traditional U.S. ignorant apathy is like? I don't that it's fully understood. Americans didn't even know Russia still existed from 1991 to 2014.

Although, it would be funny if the U.S. suddenly pulls out of a hat an end to the current Gaza war and a Palestinian state next to Israel.

Pakistan carries out retaliatory attacks in Iran over earlier airstrikes that killed two Pakistan on Thursday carried out a retaliatory attack by hitting militant targets in Iran, a day after warning Tehran of "serious consequences" for an "unprovoked breach of airspace" in the latter's aerial attacks in Balochistan that killed two children. Pakistan had strongly condemned Iran's strikes and warned that the incident could have "serious consequences" and was "completely unacceptable", expelling the Iranian ambassador and recalling its envoy from Tehran. Pakistan missiles targeted seven locations inside Iran, including hideouts and training camps of terrorists in the Sistan and Balochistan (BLA & BLF) province. Notably, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani told his Iranian counterpart that the unprecedented attack by Iran on Tuesday seriously damaged the ties between the two nations. https://www.indiatvnews.com/amp/news/world/pakistan-strikes-militant-targets-in-iran-retaliatory-action-aerial-attacks-warning-anwaar-ul-haq-kakar-latest-updates-2024-01-18-912420 Did anyone have these two fighting as a prediction?

A sad fact of Hollywood is that while superheroes never truly die, all copyrights do. On Jan. 1, Disney lost control of “Steamboat Willie,” and within 24 hours two horror-comedies starring Mickey Mouse were announced. The DC characters are the next major expirations looming on the horizon. Superman and Lois Lane will enter the public domain in 2034, followed by Batman in 2035, the Joker in 2036 and Wonder Woman in 2037. https://variety.com/2024/biz/news/superman-batman-copyrights-expire-dc-public-domain-superheroes-wonder-woman-1235875386/ It's going to be fun seeing other people's interpretations. You know they are going to have them ready to release on the first day.

Because the temperature was -3°F where I live today. Also this is what snow looks like from orbiting satellites.

Ever since the Ukraine war started in 2022, I've been following a bunch of supposed experts on geopolitics. Usually people from think tanks, academia, and former government officials. I've been convinced over half of them have no idea what they are talking about.

2024 Presidential Elections: the schadenfreude commences

Logically, I wouldn't be surprised if Trump's awfulness leads the Democrats to control the White House, House and Senate next year when they otherwise would lose the Senate. But the consequences of Trump winning are so bad that I'm concerned even when logic tells me it's unlikely to happen. -

Another way to look at is ... In the exit poll of the Iowa caucuses, ~30% of Republicans said that would NOT vote for Trump in November. -

The mental health thing was something I figured out in 2015, the first time I ever talked to someone who was just considering voting for Trump. "You're a little nutty, aren't you?" I remember thinking. -
A typical experience in the furry fandom

Yes. I got into it around 2019 around the same time I got back into D&D and other such games. -
A neon pink fox with ear rings, a pink cybernetic arm, and a pastel sweater vest. When you say hi to him, he responds with the personality of someone's dad from the 1970s. It's like talking to a pink furry Bill Burr. We're friends now.
