[classic swim]
“ in a move to push fans to Paramount+.” Not like Viacom wasn’t always shit since the dawn of man. But I do enjoy this trend of completely wiping out anything remotely useful - all in favor of something entirely useless.
rpgamer
Honestly just makes me wonder how cable can still be so expensive when nobody puts anything of value on tv anymore. All the "best" new stuff goes streaming, anything that isn't streaming-only is uploaded within a day at the latest. Literally just charging a premium to fuck customers in the ass. 1
Jman
Paramount right now is on fire. They're losing money hand over fist, their owner still has a rose-colored view of Hollywood so they turned down two potential buyout offers since they didn't fit her romanticized vision for it. They just announced an intent to slash half a billion in operating costs. Nuking their archives was the easiest step since it didn't involve canceling current projects or letting go of employees, although both will probably be happening in the coming weeks. 1
[classic swim]
I know ultimately it’s always greed, but just how much are they really saving when they do this? Seriously. What is the truthful, proper estimate? How can you be in that much of a financial fuck-up to where your best course is to mass delete decades of material without a train of thought? They don’t even think to put it on their shitty service no one actually wants to use.
katt_goddess
If they want money so damn much, why not sell off the property rights to entire collections extra cheap to some of these smaller online sites that specialize in binge watching old crap? Instead, let's just delete the entire history of your company in the hopes of what...repeating that history and pretending it's brand new? And they wonder why illegal downloading sites absolutely flourish.
[classic swim]
This comment’s a little out there except these companies absolutely do want resources gone. I refuse to believe it’s only a matter of money and simple grave negligence. Powers that be would joyfully obliterate the past at the helm of their finger tips. Because they can.

Its not that out there when you think about how historically any time some group moves into an area, one of the first things they do is destroy as much of the culture of the place as possible in order to claim their choice of history is the only history remembered. This just happens to be in the realm of historical entertainment/news. When you have a so-called political party that actively redefines any and every word that hurts their fee-fees, passes laws that violate the rights of others because they are 'Others', and encourages banning books wholesale, the thought that all these info-purges are something more than just lazy assholes suddenly thinking their portion of the internet is going to overflow and make a mess on the floor doesn't seem that far fetched.
Jman
Paramount are shitheads, but it’s because their owner is too idealistic. She should have taken the money from Sony, let Sony strip mine the whole goddamn thing, shutter Paramount Plus, and monetize the material. Instead she said no because she still thinks it’s the 50s.
