And yet fanboys will continue to run to it years after the fact to excuse One Piece's underperformance in the U.S.

The fact that few anime fans now have had personal experience with it doesn't mean that it didn't have a significant detrimental effect when it was first released and people were actually watching it on Toonami.  This isn't a hard concept. And yet despite that setback it's proven to be a long-term success for FUNi.

How do you know that?  The 4Kids dub is pretty infamous.  I think that effect is overstated.  One Piece's nature and art style just doesn't appeal to most anime fans.  They see it as too kiddy, corny, over-the-top, etc.  Yup, One Piece is a solid B+ player. :D

Yes your shitty videos add so much to a conversation.

How do I know it?  Because it misrepresented the series from day one.  One Piece is frequently silly and goofy, and Oda draws more than a little stylistic influence from classic Looney Tunes shorts, but it also plumbs some hefty emotional depths and is shockingly dark at times.  It doesn't take all that long into the series for moments like that to start cropping up, either.  I daresay that most people who fall in love with the series do so because of that aspect of it, and if a viewer never gets to experience that but instead suffers through spring-loaded guns and suction cups and murderous chakrams (wut) and people "staying in jail forever," they're not going to feel that draw

Who has less understanding of human anatomy?  Oda, or Rob Liefield? :D

I wouldn't really say the 4Kids dub was too out of character for One Piece.  If anything it just exaggerates it a bit.  The show already has juvenile moments and childish humor, fart jokes, no less.  It's already lighthearted and silly.

It's a shame Luffy didn't rescue Nami's mom from Impel Down LOL.  But, Oda still pussed out of killing characters countless times.  Like with the bird guy in Alabasta, that felt like something 4Kids could have put in.  He wouldn't even kill off the Franky Family fodder.  You want to tell me the big bad Buster Call killed NOBODY?

At the same time, the hefty emotional depths and dark moments you talked about, and the overall heart and quality of the series still shone through the 4Kids dub, at least for me.  I took to it from day one, and the fact that it combined two of my loves, anime, and pirates, didn't hurt.  Though I admit that version is a lot worse than I remember, with nostalgia goggles removed, when I saw clips when Toonami picked it back up, though I still prefer the original Zoro voice actor.  I think if people didn't take to the 4Kids dub, they wouldn't take to One Piece at all, because the same stuff that turns them off there would turn them off with a more proper localization, even if toned down a bit.

I mean I actually watched the 4kids dub on foxbox and hated it. Watched it years later (the funi dub) and loved it. I don't think it's a stretch at all to say I wasn't the only one who got turned off by that dub. It was just awful..edit Lol i am a bit late to the party though huh? I actually had a vhs tape full of ads for the shows on foxbox. Got it from Toys R us for free.
