These two genres may not be my most listened-to, but they do have a lot of gems, and deserve some love now and then.

For me, this song is a staple of family reunion campfire songs.
I think it's because so many of us live in/near Seattle.

Whenever I sing it at family reunions, I change the part about a man needing a woman
I always add, "But not really"
and my family, knowing I'm gay, gets a kick out of it.

But yeah, I love this song with all my heart.

This is lyrically a hard-hitter, and I admire Townes Van Zandt's writing style so much.
Basically the Leonard Cohen of folk/country.

Time was like water, but I was the sea.
I didn't notice it passing.
Except for the turning of night into day,
and the turning of day into cursing.

Reviving this a little, because this Blaze Foley song (performed here by John Prine) possesses a heart that doesn't waver, even at its most lyrically surreal.

The lyricism of Giddens' "Julie" is a wonderful example of how omission strengthens very traditional forms of ballads. The writing is strong, her vocals and banjo playing are beautiful and assured.

Also I want that style of banjo really badly.

I've never been a big fan of country/bluegrass, but I heard this song on a one of those new jukeboxes in a bar and I fell in love with it immediately.

Ooo! I haven't heard this, but I love it too!

I've been working to add Roger Miller's "Kansas City Star" to my karaoke repertoire; I love his music and delivery so much.

Also, I really like the other two. I remember Pinegrove playing at my school, but I was busy the night of.
