It seemed like he was supposed to die in the manga but Kubo changed his mind. His injuries weren't as bad in the anime, I think not for censorship, as this anime really doesn't have any, but to make it make more sense that Byakuya survived. Rukia and Renji, you two never trained against each other, or other Soul Reapers?
