    BONUS! We never saw Shinji's Bankai in the manga! And this explains why he couldn't use it willy-nilly before. It's an Area Of Effect ability that hits everyone in the vicinity. And the effect is like Confusion from Final Fantasy.

    This was discussed eons ago in the Fullbring arc. The idea that anything, including inanimate objects, has a soul. Favorite items that someone used and favored a lot could become a Fullbring item. But Bankais DEFINITELY have a soul, since the Zanpakuto spirit is part of the Soul Reaper's soul. So Cang-du was definitely wrong here haha.
