Dragon Ball Super Episode 23 Discussion
ben0119 replied to Meilag32's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Well also Gohan never really liked fighting and didn't do it for fun, like Goku did. Still, probably a good idea to stay in shape to protect your family and friends, which is why he trained up as a child in the first place. -

While it fits with Gohan's character to slack off from fighting, why the hell anyone gets complacent and assumes the peace will last forever THIS time, I'll never understand. -

Still can't be fun to watch your loved ones die though. Piccolo dying is yet another thing that didn't happen in the movie, by the way. What I want to know is why the hell is Korin not growing those Senzu Beans on an industrial scale at this point?! -

Attack On Titan Season 2, Episode 9 (#34) Discussion
ben0119 replied to OwlChemist81's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
You've never heard of these videos? I think there's one that's like 10 hours of the Bulk and Skull music or something. Not sure what they're called, but they're a thing. It's a joke. -

Tokyo Ghoul episode 12: "GHOUL" discussion

I'm sure they were trying to be super artsy and dramatic by simply calling the episode "Ghoul." If only Toonami had only gotten season 1, our suffering would all be over after tomorrow! ::: -
The Toonami Ratings Thread 1.0 :You are on a new board
ben0119 replied to StarPanda's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
I'm just using the ratings to back up my bitching about programming decisions and shows I don't like. I was done paying attention to them, but after the unprecedented idiocy of the Rick & Morty stunt and the Jack reruns leading the block, I could no longer afford to stay silent. And the worse Hiatus does the better. -
Umm, actually celebrating the holiday and not watching TV?

They aren't. We've gone camping and fishing on the beach, Padre Island, in fact. But when you say it like that "one of the biggest beach weekends!", that's what conjures in the mind. Lolyahoo. Again, business news doesn't interest me. Unless it's some big headline thing like Amazon buying Whole Foods I probably won't look into it. Or you know, something catastrophic like the Great Recession. It doesn't affect me. Yes well I've watched plenty of news broadcasts, local, main network, cable, you name it, and never saw any such blurb, so...

*goes back to original post* Hm. I must have misread that. To be fair, I've been up all night and all day. Trying to get my sleep schedule straightened out so I'm not pure nocturnal. Probably should've waited to go on the boards until after I caught up on my sleep. Lol at you thinking there's a vast overlap between subbies and casual Toonami viewers. And really, fansubs are still a thing? Oh, I know why they're doing it. They're so predictably inept it's sad. Actually, I shouldn't say that, for some fucking reason I thought they wouldn't do something this stupid and disappointing. Don't know why I had that faith in them! For some reason I thought they would have the sense to not repeat the Attack on Titan incident! The logic there was also HUR THIS GOT GOOD RATINGS AND COST A LOT LET'S GET OUR MONEY'S WORTH AND WATCH IT STILL GET GOOD RATINGS DUUUUR. And they've got no brain indeed if they thought this was going to work. Reruns are reruns. People don't care if Demarco sold his kidney to help finance this thing. They don't want to watch something they just fucking watched. They're killing the rest of the block with their insistence on HERBADERP GET OUR MONEY'S WORTH HUR HUR. It would make more sense to run it beside the prime time Super airing or another night, instead of cannibalizing the block with it. -
You said it was a "beach weekend" which is what brought the half-naked partying college kids to mind, not a "family get-together." MTV would cover various partying locations on various holidays (never Fourth of July, I looked it up), and E! had that Wild On show, which I don't ever recall covering 4th of July either. Then again maybe I was too mesmerized by Brooke Burke, lol. I wouldn't be watching TV, much less the news, on 4th of July when there are actual real fireworks and stuff to be had. You might as well ask me why I don't watch fireworks on TV instead of the ones in person. The area I'm in is not bumblefuck. If you've seen other posts by me you know I hate those backwater nothing areas. They drive me nuts. I just went on a rant about it in the ratings thread, in fact. And you would've just read where I said I live in a suburb of 50,000 within reasonable driving distance of Austin.... So yeah sorry I don't watch Fox Business and CNBC 24/7 like you apparently do. Business news doesn't interest me. Anyway, your link is the first I've heard of this phenomenon and the first proof. The only thing there that I already figured was going on was the part about people buying a fuckton of beer.

Are you really going to act like you didn't see my typo there and just act like I was arguing the opposite of what I was arguing? And you call me disingenuous. As a response to your earlier "more than once every 5 months!" nonsense, I was pointing out the people on here who habitually watched the shit over and over and over and over. Obviously I left out a negative in that sentence. Why the hell would I point out Ranlsa and her ilk but to disprove your notion that most people don't watch something more than once every 5 years? Hell, I know plenty of people who have favorite movies they probably watch at least once a year, if not more. I've got a friend that has Invader Zim and Aqua Teen DVDs which he obviously watches a decent amount since I don't remember most of the references he brings up these days. Been years since I watched those shows. Point is, there's plenty of people that have favorite stuff they watch fairly frequently. Of course, I put a big difference between people who will obsessively watch it on TV and those who own it or watch it on a stream from time to time at their own convenience. Oh, I don't think enough time has passed. Lest you forget, reruns of movies from a year ago did shit ratings in the second month of movies! Umm, if it was different people all the time the ratings wouldn't have kept decreasing. So obviously there was a recurring audience aware they were going to keep running the same shit into the ground and they got tired of it. If there were a vast constant rotation of viewers like you claim the shows' would have kept up their ratings. Well yes that is what lead to that situation but the point remains that if you run shit into the ground, for whatever the reason, you are going to pay the price. I dunno' there's some pretty morbid incompetence right now to be airing Jack at the top of the block! Regardless of the cause these reruns are like iron being formed in a star. They know what happened last time with Attack on Titan. Why the fuck would they repeat it?! How stupid can they possibly be?! -

You were trying to act like "most people", no one normal, surely, would watch those shows over and over and over. Well, we had a group here that did, and the shows were getting hundreds of thousands of views, even if they weren't good enough to stay on the air, someone was watching that shit! So, all I was doing was proving you wrong on that fact. I'm not the one that raised the specter of additional reruns, and Bebop, no less. Let's not forget those reruns killed ASA and nearly anime on Adult Swim in general if not for Toonami, and bifurcated Toonami itself. So it's bit more of a matter of "don't watch if you don't like it!" Reruns are a threat to the block, as we can see with Attack on Titan, Samurai Jack, and the ASA dead horses. -
Never heard of this. I should've seen it covered by MTV, E!, et al way back when, if that were the case. Spring Break, Cinco De Mayo, Labor Day, you name it. Don't remember 4th of July. Yeah people will get drunk and party, shoot off fire works, stuff their faces, but it's generally a local thing. I don't live in a mountain resort. Maybe all the snowbirds come down here and that's why it seems like no one goes anywhere, because... WE... don't. It's a 4 hour drive for my family to get together... WITHIN Texas. And I don't remember too many times when we did that for 4th of July. Aunt and my youngest cousin just went back home tonight so I doubt they'll be back again as soon as July 4th. We usually just go watch the fireworks in town, in the park. Pretty good show for a city of over 50,000! And again, if we want to shoot off our own we'd have to go into the country where my mother and her husband live and nobody wants to be around them.
-
Only ones of those I've heard in common vernacular are Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekends. And Thanksgiving, which you didn't mention, which is always near a weekend. Mother's Day and Father's Day people celebrate but no one calls it a weekend. Christmas is a huge holiday that stands on its own, goes way beyond a mere weekend. Students and workers sure as hell don't get extra days for Halloween. Of course it works out with all the haunted houses, parties etc being in the evening and at night.

It's the same way people know every line before its spoken in something like Star Wars or Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's really not that difficult. I can have Ghost in the Shell on in the background and know pretty much every scene and line before it happens. -

Ranlsa and her deranged cohorts watched these shows ad nauseum for eons and flipped out when they got removed, but ultimately continued to set up "watch parties" on their own. That's a sickness right there. So yeah, I stopped watching them after I got tired of them, as I said, many years before they were finally taken off. So don't talk to me about neurotypical. I'm downright mentally perfect compared to those rerun addicts. Doesn't mean I wasn't tired of them being there and they weren't wasting airtime. And as has been mentioned before, the shows weren't always run back to back to death. They had more shows, staggered them, rotated them, etc. In earlier times the reruns were handled much more logically and were much more tolerable. -

Are you insinuating that if we had more free slots at the end that Adult Swim could put Samurai Jack back there instead of having it torpedo the block at the beginning? You know they'd never do that to their precious Jack, especially after they financed it! Gotta get all the mileage out of it we can, even at the expense of the block! Plus, it got good ratings the first time, sure it will get good ratings if we play it again immediately after it just ended herbaderp! And if you want to call those slots throwaway, I'd rather they do something like put a "too old" show, there. It'd be harmless if it didn't do well. As it is, most fans won't find out about classic anime unless they seek it out. Of course, those shows cost money, even if they are ancient, and these vault shows don't. Still, fuck those shows. I'm not going to let them off the hook for running those shows into the ground any time soon. This wouldn't have been such an issue if they handn't lost the rights to like 7 shows of their library in one year way back when. And since then they've switched to a model where they don't even maintain a library. It's wam bam thank you ma'am! In a perfect world, we'd get as many premieres as we currently get, and we'd have slots at the end to rerun them, careful to rotate them so nothing gets played umpteen times in a row. The way it is now, if someone is a new fan to the block or missed a show for whatever reason, they never get a second chance to see them, or maybe watch them again, if they were so inclined. You'd have to seek them out via a streaming service and watch them on your own, with no one to discuss them with. That is, of course, if you knew the show existed in the first place, much less that it aired on the block. Oh, but here's Bebop for the 80 billionth time! Of course, I understand the budget is limited. Still, bleh. -

I have nearly Elephantine memory and they played those shows like 80 billion times, so yeah, it's possible. And like I said I got sick of them and stopped watching them a good several years before they finally put them out of their misery. -
Again, nothing I've personally ever heard of happening or witnessed. People are just treating it like any other vacation and travelling to some random location? Doesn't sound very patriotic. You're supposed to shoot off fire works and reflect on the founding of this country. Now, you might say that using it as yet another excuse to get drunk and stuff your face (and blow shit up, as Gaffigan accurately describes), isn't so patriotic, but what you've described is less patriotic still. Unless maybe they were to travel to some major city with spectacular fire works, which again, one would think would be closer by. For instance, I could travel to Austin and watch those fire works, but it's way too many people, too much traffic. Plus, fuck Austin, it's a hive of hipsters, hippies, and hobos. There's very few things worth going to Austin for. CaptainStarwind[/member] does Hersheypark have fireworks? Though this is something I always thought of going on with New Year's Eve. 4th of July falls on one single day where you don't get days off around it, unlike Christmas+New Year's, and each city is known for their own particular iconic New Year's celebration. And again all I've ever heard of is people celebrating the 4th at home, maybe at a friend's or relative's house, but always somewhere relatively nearby, not these cross-country road trips you guys are describing. Finally, there is no "Independence Day Weekend." The holiday is celebrated on an actual date. It's not like something like Thanksgiving, which is always on the last Thursday of November. So, there's no guarantee of it falling on, much less close to, the weekend. Like this year, it's plumb in the middle of the week practically!
-
Well that doesn't make any sense. Every case I've heard of personally and what's been portrayed in all of the media and entertainment, fiction and non-fiction, I've consumed, asserts that 4th of July is a "stay-at-home" holiday. This is what people do on 4th of July -
-
Everyone I know and everyone around here in town just goes to watch the fireworks in the park. I suppose you could drive into a larger city to watch fireworks or drive out into the boonies to shoot your own off but I've never heard of anyone taking dedicated cross-country trips on 4th of July. Then again, next door, there's a lot more cars and people there than usual. But they've been there the past several days, maybe a week or more. Surely they wouldn't be celebrating 4th of July that long!
