I think it's important to clearly define what you want, and what you don't want so there are very clear and hopefully openly communicated boundaries. If you want a relationship and nothing else, you should be open about it, and let the guy know. If he decides not to be friends with you, it just means you weeded somebody out who just wanted your body and nothing else. If you are down for friends with benefits, but worried it will screw things up, set up a solid list of rules for you two to follow. A good basic setup is: No romance (which means both parties know this won't be anything else), no touchy feeling in public or at school/work, no other partners, and it ends as soon as either party finds a bf/gf.
