the cosmically funny story behind why Sonic 06 was so awful

they released the wrong version of the game because a bunch of shit went wrong

1. first Yuji Naka (Sonic's creator who was heading the project) left Sega to form his own company, so the team had no idea what the fuck to do

2. the higher ups at Sega demanded there also be a sonic title on the Wii, and switched half of 06's team over to that game (sonic and the secret rings) and expected the small amount of people left to somehow still manage to make a functional sonic game

3. despite the team managing to complete the game....the final version was corrupted and would not play, so they had no choice but to release a (MUCH) earlier test build in it's place, and hope nobody would notice that the game wasn't finished (everybody did)

content from the final version that never made it into the released version included

1. night and day passed in real time (like in Majora's mask)

2. Silver ran just as fast as Shadow (in the released game he's the slowest character)

3. Sonic could turn into Super Sonic in town using an item called the "rainbow gem" (an incomplete version is in the released game, but does nothing but make sonic pose like supersonic without changing color)

4.it's not 100% confirmed, but it's believed that the lost final version had tutorial gameplay leading up to the game's first cutscene (like Super Mario Galaxy), apparently the game's credits played while sonic ran through the streets of Soleana towards the festival of the sun

(the cutscene that the released build opens on)

4. in the builds shown at E3 2006, the iconic bubble shield was a power up, in the released game it doesn't exist

considering the versions that played at E3 2006 were more stable and had many items that the released version lacked, it is believe that they came from a build closer to the final than the build that was used in the retail version, why those versions were not releasable is a mystery but it's theorized that the ones playable at e3 may have been running on supercomputers rather than actual Xbox 360's

Do you think it really would have made a difference?

for the gameplay yes, for the story no

edit: apparently some of the team that worked on the game implied that the released version was only 10% complete.....that's REALLY bad
