Chinese are moving into my area at an alarming rate, setting up little farming operations, and even now I shop at their awesome grocery store, but I'd like to communicate with them aside from hello.

Most of them don't speak a lick of english and I don't want to move so if I already know conversational Japanese why not Mandarin.

I've heard that Mandarin is an extremely difficult to language to learn for a native English speaker. I'm trying to learn to read Latin and Greek, but they're pretty hard languages to pick up.

I have a reading knowledge of French, but there are still a lot of times when I don't know a word or an idiomatic expression and have to look up the meaning.

They're everywhere now in my area. They're buying properties like hot cakes, the least I'd like to be able to do is communicate with them enough to say hello, ask what they're growing, etc.
