If they're trying to throw out someone running home, an outfielder might throw with all his might to the catcher. But even if his intention is to throw to the catcher, a cut-off man, usually an infielder, may catch his throw and throw it to the catcher himself, or throw to another base trying to throw out another runner or to keep another runner from advancing.
