the water heater stopped working on the coldest night of winter

First you have to figure out which kind it is.  I'm not an expert but I believe newer ones are electric.  You have something to worry about if it's gas but might just have to relight the pilot.
In the mean time, you can heat water the old fashion way.

You can...umm relight the pilot light and it will probably work again if that is the issue.

its all rotted and rusted. it cant be fixed. they are bringing a new one tomorrow. cant wait to have a complete shower without the water running cold.

they are replacing it for free but want $200 for some kind of plumbing upgrade...? probably ripping us off.

That's interesting. My water heater is pretty new, and the gas valves and pilot starter are pretty easy to light so it might be worth the money. If you are renting I don't see how you'd have to pay for that though..

Oh right. It might be worth it then. The people that were renting this before I bought it said mine was put

in a month prior or something so the plumbing upgrade might be neccessary for the newer set up.
