Archie Officially Cancels Sonic the Hedgehog

Recommended Posts

Yes, after running for 24 years (making it the longest running American comic series in history), this week Sega and Archie officially announced that they have cancelled the Sonic the Hedgehog series as well as it's spin-off series Sonic Universe.  If you were a fan of Sonic as a kid, there's a good chance you followed this series at some point in time.

The Sonic series ran for 290 issues before it was unceremoniously cancelled (meaning it never got a final story arc) and if you include all the side series

  • 32 issues of Knuckles the Echidna
  • 94 issues of Sonic Universe
  • 17 issues of various miniseries
  • 13 issues of it's one-shot specials
  • 15 issues of it's Super Special series
  • 40 issues of Sonic X
  • 11 issues of Sonic Boom

make for a grand total of 512 comics.  And that's not even counting the issues of the Mega Man series where Sonic and Mega Man did a whole crossover thing.

So, in remembrance of a series that had dizzying heights of awesomeness (as well as terrible lows), feel free to post something you remember.

A final note, a couple of days after announcing the cancellation of the Archie Series, Sega has announced that they have partnered with IDW to create a brand new Sonic series.

Ken Penders.  Created pretty much every character except for the Sega owned ones and the original Freedom Fighter team.  Then after leaving Archie, sued for the rights to all those characters and actually won (either by Sega losing the paperwork or him stealing it), and killing the series.

technically he didn't "win", the judge threw out the case because it was rediculous and Archies just dumped all his characters of their own will because they hated him :|
