Dragon Ball Super Episode 42 Discussion
ben0119 replied to Meilag32's topic in Episode Discussion Archive
Kill Yamcha again Beerus! No one will miss him! This episode was hilarious! And the fight was pretty good too! The thing is, the underwhelming person who is secretly uber strong is a somewhat common trope, but Monaka is just straight up a loser. -
Then why did you need to clear the history?

I don't agree with that. Pretty sure it's a small minority of people that still care about Roman Polanski's movies. And a lot them have defended the man and his actions, including people in Hollywood. Woudn't be surprised if they're perverts themselves given everything that's been coming out lately. I know I have no interest in them. How could anybody ever watch/read Kenshin without this popping into their head? It's like trying to watch something with David Carradine and not think about his ridiculous death. http://variety.com/2017/film/asia/japan-sex-scandal-rurouni-kenshin-nobuhiro-watsuki-child-pornography-1202622793/ By the way, a screening of the movies was canceled.

That girl looks like she's 6 years old or younger. Not that it would be much better if she was older, but that's creepy as hell for sure, yeah. I mean, they could get away with the whole he loves his adorable little sister thing, I'm thinking something similar to Hughes and his daughter, but..the nosebleed. -

Haha yeah Tokyo Ghoul was great to make fun of. And that origin story... lol. Also, man, I just remembered... the whole thing with the doctor was never followed up on. You'd think Kaneki would want to hunt him down and figure out what the deal was with all that. Blue Exorcist was generic itself. How can Black Clover be even more generic than that?! That review... oof. And they said Naruto portrays the polar opposite best friends better? Not a vote of confidence given Naruto doesn't do that very well either. Kishimoto tells us repeatedly that they're best friends, but they come off more like casual co-workers than anything else. Which makes Naruto's obsession with bringing back Sasuke very bizarre. Itachi even asked "why are you obsessed with my brother?" Also didn't like that Sasuke's leaving the village was permanent, that he wasn't brought back after that arc, and that it would be an ongoing thing throughout the series. It's not much motivation to pull for Naruto to achieve this "goal," given Sasuke is a traitorous asshole. Yet Naruto even says there's a jail cell waiting for Kabuto... but not Sasuke for some reason. Bleh, got on a rant there. But yeah, this show is just sounding better and better. -

I don't care about ratings either, but it would be nice if they picked better shows. -
I'm sure you've clicked on way worse things than this.

I got a DBZ and an InuYasha shirt. There's levels to this. Wearing this thing is going to make you a target for mockery or Law & Order: SVU.

Well Demarco has said how a lot of the shows they want get locked up on streaming services. So we would have those shows if not for that. But, the competition was pretty fierce back when other networks actually showed anime. Can it be much worse now? But, you do have a point. Just because they couldn't get the shows they had their heart set on doesn't mean they had to get the crap they got instead. They really need to do away with that whole "we only air what we like" nonsense. I mean, the only people that care about Gundam in the U.S. besides Toonami are a few hardcore fans. Either way, there's been a lot of bungling, and the block has gotten worse and worse and more disappointing. -

D: Is it at least good riffing material? Well I wouldn't say Super has been terrible so far myself but it seems many others are unimpressed, and it's obviously reflected in the ratings. They were going to get it no matter what since it's Dragon Ball though. But, those fools were still requesting it, even after all that time. Demarco HAS to give the fans what they want! -

Recap of all the fucked up sexual shit in Jojo so far
ben0119 replied to mochi's topic in Toonami & [adult swim]
Uhh, you know most of this stuff is jokes and meant to be ridiculous right? Don't recall the doll getting an erection. And biting balls off is hardly sexual. That's a threat of the worst kind of mutilation! The pig toilet thing is meant to be funny. As is licking the toilet. That's a classic threat/punishment. Why wouldn't they make fun of him and how does doing that make it sexual? So... not a fetish. The fact you took most of this as fetishes I think speaks more about you than it does the author, lol. -

You know there's always the possibility that the screaming (over this show being the worst thing ever) is much ado about nothing. Who here has actually seen it? People were going into convulsions over Kekkaishi and SAO airing too, and I ended up liking both of those. And I don't remember how Kekkaishi did but I know SAO did well. -

A big hit? Lolno. What were the great big ultimate debut shows when Toonami first came back? Deadman Wonderland and Casshern. Along with some old ASA shows that had already been run to death, and Bleach. Bleach is the only thing that kept anime from being completely taken off Adult Swim, by the way. It kept the lights on long enough for Toonami to return as an experiment, and if that experiment failed the anime would've been done. Don't recall the ratings being anything to write home about at the time (well maybe compared to now they are, not sure), but I know they steadily grew and the block came into its own, eventually getting bigger and bigger shows, in addition to picking up shows that should've aired years ago that ASA foolishly didn't acquire. But now the past couple years with streaming services cutting them off at the knees, they are missing out on a lot of the must-get properties, which is very unfortunate. People on the boards at the time, and we got a lot of new people at that time, by the way, were absolutely up in arms over the offerings of the reborn Toonami. Think they wanted some of the classics and maybe better new shows, not sure. Before the block came back it was a positive camaraderie atmosphere with the grass roots effort to bring the block back after the April 1st test. I actually left the folder for a good while after that until things finally cooled down. That's how toxic it was after the block returned. Now, I didn't think Deadman Wonderland and Casshern along with the old shows rejiggered, with some taken off and others added, was the greatest debut ever, but considering how awful things were under ASA, having three actual premieres at the same time along with the Tom and the Absolution back was a major improvement. Tokyo Ghoul is ridiculously popular, so it made sense to air it, regardless of how shitty it is. As was discussed before it would seem they're attempting to get in early with Black Clover, like they did with Bleach and several other shows. But, if it doesn't catch on, it's not going to be good. At least maybe they could just shift it later if it doesn't do well, and hopefully still keep the new slot and use it for something else. Not sure what the deal is with Super. It seems that the sub has gone casual, possibly the only sub ever that has, since it's Dragon Ball. I see people talking about recent episodes in non-anime specific spaces, like the wrestling podcast chat room I frequent. So that may have something to do with it. The 8pm airing probably didn't help, so we'll see what happens after it's gone. It could also be that people have decided they simply don't like the show. I also wonder if it would do better after Kai is finished. Maybe people don't like to have 2 episodes of the same show or franchise on the block in a row. Can't say. That said, TV has lost a lot of viewers overall, so you can't just put it all on Toonami. It also needs to be taken into account that people watch via recordings or the Adult Swim stream and video section. Not just the polls but Demarco answers people on Ask and Twitter, they've done panels and Q&As at conventions, online Q&As, done interviews for podcasts and websites, and there's Pre-Flight. So they're about as open and fan friendly and fan interactive as you can get. If Gman's memory and word is to be trusted, Demarco never really said things were fine right up until they weren't. He'd say they were for a while and then wouldn't say anything after a while, and in some cases they pretty much admitted when something was in a bad spot, like with One Piece. -

Because you don't expose the inner workings of how you run things to such an extent that could be bad for you? They don't want the competition knowing that stuff, and you generally don't discuss business deals openly due to legal, courteous and professional reasons. Deals are made in private. They don't want to piss off the people they're working with and they don't want to tip off Netflix who will scoop them if Demarco so much as sneezes the name of a show they're interested in. Remember, he said that if Netflix finds out they're interested in a show they bid double what Toonami does and snatch it up. There's also Hulu and others to contend with. Demarco said it's been very tough to pick up the shows they want lately because of this. Pretty sure it's because they ran out of Toonami relevant material. And they have admitted to GXP and other fairly recent things as being blunders. -

Yeah, I'm eating crow now. Don't judge a book by its cover! -
Yeah, I'd prefer to be able to separate it in my mind, but I don't know if I can. I mean I pretty much don't even think about Chris Benoit anymore unless someone else brings him up, and I haven't gone back and watched any of his stuff since then. Maybe it's easier to not notice with an author, artist, or director, since you aren't physically seeing the person onscreen who did the deeds? The fact it's a comic/anime and not live action, another degree of separation, might also help? Don't know. I think it also depends on the severity of the offense. Then again, Mike Tyson once bit a man's ear off, was convicted of rape, was a legit scary, violent dude. Now he's a lovable gentle giant doing comedies and starring in an Adult Swim show, pretty much making fun of himself, and raising homing pigeons. So, redemption is possible. But, child porn? That's quite a line crossed. And it's not like anything Watsuki does will ever stop him from having that fetish. At least maybe the girls are just nude and not actually molested in the videos, not that that helps much. It's tough, for sure.

Saw this comment on the MAL post - https://myanimelist.net/news/53117249 "I guess I speak for the whole fandom who has been supporting the series since the beginning when most of us were just kids when I say I am so deeply upset and disappointed and I feel betrayed. Rurouni Kenshin was a huge part of my childhood and it had a big impact in my life. It really hurts knowing he wrote these characters with strong morals and beliefs only to mess it up himself. His own characters would never forgive him. That's what's giving me comfort right now, to think of Kenshin and his friends beating Watsuki's as*. Even the villains such as Shishio would never approve of his actions. I cannot however, throw away everything the series meant to me." That's an admirable thought, but, I dunno, man. It's going to be impossible for me to read or watch Kenshin again without this popping into my head. I still haven't read the manga. D: Re-watched the anime some months back, then the movie. Was going to re-watch the OVAs, watch that Kyoto Arc OVA I hadn't seen yet, then I was going to read the never animated manga arc and ending. Not sure I will now. D:

Thing is though, Kenshin wasn't remotely perverted. It doesn't even really have fan service. So this really comes out of no where. Yeah but that was innocent childhood nudity. Some people think it's cute and/or funny. And there is some perverted as hell stuff in Dragon Ball, but it deals with women. Lots of it comic relief based, too. Also remember when Goku would constantly find guys' porn stashes? I don't know how the world would deal with an institution like Dragon Ball having the author being a sex offender, though. I saw someone comment somewhere they hope Oda doesn't get swept up in this since he was apparently Watsuki's assistant for years. I just... can't.

I was going to say how I was finally touched by #metoo, but ehh. But yeah, none of the pervos who have gone down, uhh, been exposed, uhhhh, taken out, were really anybody I gave a shit about until now. DAMN IT!
